Itinerary
- Day 1
Kilimanjaro Airport to Moshi
You'll arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and head to your hotel in Moshi, which takes about 40 minutes by car. The property has a pool, wifi, a small shop, and gear rental if you need it. Spend the day organizing your bags, grabbing bottled water, and settling in. Your guide meets you later in the afternoon to go over the trek details and answer any questions you have.

Nale Moru to First Cave
After a 2.5-hour transfer from Marangu park gate, you'll meet your guide and porters at Nale Moru village to start the Rongai route. The day begins with a gentle walk through maize fields and pine forest with gradual elevation gain, so it's not steep at all. As you go higher, the forest opens up and you reach First Cave camp around 2,600 metres in the afternoon. Water's available below the cave if you need it.

First Cave to Kikelewa Cave
You'll continue on the Rongai trail toward Kibo with views of the Eastern ice fields showing up. Pass Second Cave at 3,450 metres along the way, then cross through Kikelewa moorlands beneath the Mawenzi peaks. The day ends at Kikelewa Cave area and then the 3rd Cave camp at about 3,600 metres, where the views are great from the camp.

Kikelewa to Mawenzi Tarn
This day brings a short but steep climb up grassy slopes with really nice wilderness views around you. You'll leave the moorland region and enter the lunar alpine desert that sits between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Camp at Mawenzi Tarn, which has a dramatic setting in the shadows of Mawenzi. Spend the afternoon acclimatizing and walking around the area to help your body adjust.

Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Camp
Keep going up along the east side of Kibo, crossing the saddle between the two peaks. It takes 4 to 5 hours to get to Kibo Hut from here. You'll camp at Kibo Camp and rest for the rest of the day since the main summit push starts around midnight. Save your energy and get sleep while you can.

Uhuru Peak to Horombo Huts
Wake around 11pm and start the summit ascent in the early morning darkness. Follow the zig-zag path toward Gilmans Point where you can see into the crater. From there it's 2 more hours to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, reaching the summit around 8:30am as sunrise happens. After celebrating, you'll trek back down to Kibo Huts, grab your gear, cross the plateau to Horombo Huts, and have dinner there.

Horombo Huts to Marangu Park Gate to Moshi
Wake up, pack your things, and head down the same route to Mandara Huts where you'll have lunch. Then continue down to Marangu park gate to meet your vehicle back to Moshi. You'll get your Kilimanjaro certificate here, green if you reached Gilmans Point or gold if you summited at Uhuru Peak.
