Algiers

Algiers
Following breakfast, take an orientation tour of Algiers. You'll wander through the UNESCO-listed Kasbah and see how French colonial architecture blends with Islamic design in its narrow streets. Head to the Colonial Cathedral of Notre Dame d'Afrique overlooking the Mediterranean, and then spend time at the National Museum of Antiquities looking at exhibits that span from prehistoric times through the Islamic period.

Djemila
After breakfast, drive early to Sétif (330 km, about 4.5 hours). Stop at the museum there to learn about its Roman heritage. Later, after lunch, head to the archaeological site of Djemila. The ruins from the 1st century AD are in great condition, with the Temple of Augusts and a large Forum among the highlights.

Timgad
Travel from Sétif to Timgad, a 131 km drive taking 2.5 hours. You'll stop in Batna to visit Madghassen, a royal mausoleum from the Berber Numidian Kings. Then explore Timgad, which is the best-preserved Roman colonial town in North Africa. Check out the museum with its collection of mosaics, walk through the grid-patterned streets, and see the Arch of Trajan, Capitol, and amphitheatre.

Constantine
After breakfast, drive to Constantine (118 km, 2 hours). The city sits on natural rock outcrops and offers plenty to see. You'll cross six bridges including the Roman Kantara Bridge, walk past the ruins of the Antonian Roman Aqueduct, visit the Great Mosque of Constantine, the Kasbah, the Ottoman Palace of Ahmed Bey from the 19th century, and Constantine's Museum.

Taghit
After breakfast, head to Tiddis and spend time at the archaeological site there. After lunch, continue to the airport for a flight to Béchar (2 hours with a connection through Algiers) on the northern edge of the Sahara. Walk through Béchar's European and traditional quarters, then continue on to Taghit, where you'll stay the night surrounded by date palm groves.

Taghit
After breakfast, drive to Beni Abbes (160 km, 2 hours). You'll explore the surrounding dunes and visit the Sahara Museum along with Charles de Foucauld's clay fort built in 1901. Explore the old Ksar in the oasis. Later, return to Taghit (160 km, 2 hours) to see the caves on the cliffs and Ksar Taghit, the old mud-brick settlement set among lush palms.

Head to Béchar (95 km, 1.5 hours) and take a flight to Oran (2.5 hours). Once you land, you'll be met and transferred to your hotel.

Oran
After breakfast, explore Oran with a city orientation tour. Visit La Cathédrale du Sacré Coeur and Santa Cruz Fort, which sits 400 metres above the city looking out over the port and Mediterranean. The fort has a impressive castle, chapel, and a large statue of the Virgin Mary.

Tipaza - Cherchell - Algiers
After breakfast, drive to Tipaza (375 km, 3.75 hours). Spend the afternoon exploring ruins with Phoenician, Roman, Byzantine, and Christian influences. You'll see stone amphitheatres, temples, and basilicas along the coast. From there, head to Cherchell and visit the museum housing some of the best Roman and Greek antiquities on the African continent. Then drive to Algiers (70 km, 1 hour) and check in.
