Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Puerto del Carmen

You'll arrive in Puerto del Carmen and settle into your hotel in this coastal resort town on Lanzarote's southeast coast. The tour leader meets you at hotel reception at 7pm for a welcome meeting to go over the week ahead. After that, dinner's available if you're interested, though it's optional. Your hotel sits right in the center of town, so the old port, beaches, and restaurants are all within easy walking distance if you want to head out and get your bearings.

    Optional Activities

    • Dinner with tour group after welcome meeting
    Landmarks/POIs
    Avenida de las Playas
  2. Day 2

    Playa Quemada

This morning you'll drive about 30 minutes south to Femes village at the base of the southern mountains. From there, you'll start a moderate walk of 10 kilometres through the volcanic Ajaches hills on a well-marked trail, then pick up the coastal path heading toward Playa Quemada. This charming fishing village has secluded beaches and seafood restaurants, so you'll have options for lunch. The whole walk takes around 4 hours, and you'll be back at the hotel in the afternoon.

    Meals
    Breakfast

    Included Activities

    • Guided walk from Femes through Ajaches hills to Playa Quemada

  3. Day 3

    Mirador del Rio

You'll head north from Puerto del Carmen to Maguez village near the northwest coast. The walk here follows clifftop paths toward Mirador del Rio, a viewpoint at 475 metres built right into lava rock by local artist César Manrique. Inside, floor-to-ceiling glass windows give you panoramic views across the Rio Strait all the way to La Graciosa island. It's a leisurely 12-kilometre walk taking about 4.5 hours, and you'll drive back to Puerto del Carmen in the afternoon.

  4. Day 4

    La Geria

After driving to the island's center, you'll walk through the dramatic volcanic landscape of Timanfaya with its black lava, craters, and lunar-like terrain. Starting near Mancha Blanca village on dirt paths, you'll see varying volcanic rock formations around you. Later in the afternoon, you'll visit La Geria's vineyards and stop at a local bodega to try Malvasia wines produced in this harsh volcanic environment. The walk covers 10 kilometres at a leisurely pace, taking approximately 4 hours total.

  5. Day 5

    Puerto del Carmen

Today is yours to do as you please. If you want something structured, there's an optional day trip to La Graciosa, a small arid island with fewer than 700 residents, unpaved sand roads, and isolated beaches with a really slow pace of life. Alternatively, you can visit Jameos de Agua, a venue built into the Corona volcano's cave system with a swimming pool, restaurant, and bar. Or there's a self-guided walk option available if you'd rather explore on your own.

    Meals
    Breakfast

  6. Day 6

    Famara Beach - Teguise

You'll drive north to Haria, a pretty village in the Valley of the Thousand Palm Trees with white-washed buildings everywhere. From there, a moderate 12-kilometre walk crosses surrounding hills passing fig trees and grape vines to Bosquecillo clifftop, where you can see Famara Beach spread out below. Then you'll descend rocky paths to 5 kilometres of golden sand backed by dramatic 500-metre cliffs with views to La Graciosa. In the afternoon, you'll return to the hotel with a stop in Teguise, Lanzarote's old capital. The walk takes about 4.5 hours.

    Arrieta - Cactus Garden

Starting from Puerto del Carmen, you'll drive to Guatiza and walk along trails leading down to the coast. The route follows rugged coastal paths passing traditional operating salines and volcanic terrain near Arrieta village. By early afternoon you'll arrive with time to explore this Canarian fishing community, relax on Playa de la Garita, or swim in the ocean. Before heading back to the hotel, there's a stop at César Manrique's Cactus Garden, which has about 4,500 cactus specimens from 500 species. This moderate 15-kilometre walk takes roughly 5.5 hours.

My highlight was definitely the walk to the highest point of the island of Lanzarote and the long descent to the beach. The valley we ascended had interesting flowers and bushes and the scenery on the this day was extremely varied.

I have done most of the walks offered by Explore in the Canary Islands, and even though Lanzarote is dryer and has less vegetation, I still thoroughly enjoyed all of the walks.

Adrián, our tour leader was amazing. A constant bundle of energy and fun. I think he gelled well with the whole group and all our experiences were enhanced by his cheerful nature. The scenery of the island exceeded my expecations. Pretty unspoiled villages with whitewashed buildings and palm trees. Vast expanses of volcanic landscape. Wonderful coastlines and well judged walking.

This trip is graded Leisurely and Moderate - which means it is ideal if you want to enjoy both leisurely and moderate level walks, mainly on good paths and at low altitude and with the occasional more demanding ups and downs. It is not a difficult walking trip and passengers walk at their own pace.
