We took this tour because we felt it may be difficult to travel independently and safely through Central America. Intrepid promised a real experience - local transport, trips to local restaurants and interaction with locals. This tour was split between two guides Edwin and Rafa. Rafa was always pressurizing the group to take expensive transport and tour upgrades with little alternative. Also taking the group to expensive restaurants and recommending no alternatives. He was also poor with information and badly organised. Edwin though very nice and generally very helpful was flawed as a guide. He gave a huge amount of repetitive information - every travel day after a long tiring journey Edwin would arrive at the hotel sit everyone in the lobby and talk for about an hour giving often unnecessary information on locations when all people wanted to do was get to their rooms - he would deliberately withold wifi passwords and room keys so we would be forced to listen to him speak. When challenged on this he became difficult to deal with and ignored concerns. Edwin spent 80-100 hours repeating the same information over and over and even explained in detail how to use a traffic light to cross the road. In the whole tour one day was spent at a local village. Only one day was spent on genuine local transport and the guides took us to extremely expensive tourist restaurants with low quality and certainly not local food. So the genuine local experience was pretty much non existent. Nearly all the transport was private - minibus, not particularly comfortable and a constant pressure from guides to tip drivers at the end of each journey. Being private transport we were disapointed not to stop and look at the amazing scenery - there was one stop on the entire trip for a photo opportunity, despite requests to our guides. The majority of trip felt more like a beach holiday as much of the time was spent on beach resorts. We were sold one trip by Intrepid this effectively four separate trips aimed at people on short holidays not people travelling for 60 days. The disjointed nature of the trip while waiting for new people to join wastes time and as the guides are constantly catering for new people makes for a very repetitive where you constantly go to beaches and places areas you would not normally do on a single trip. We were delighted to leave the trip in Panama and believe this was the feeling of many people that travelled with us. The amalgamation of various tour companies to the one Intrepid company led to a total mismatch ages from 18-65 causing friction in the group. This made it hard for the guides. On a positive note the accomodation was in the most part really good as on all intrepid tours, I would recommend some of Intrepids individual tours - but not a long one and not the Honduras/Nicaragua/Costa Rica.

What is the weather like from June to September? When would be a better time to join the tour? Are Covid vaccine and negative testing required to enter each country? Which passport to use in Central America? How much budget should I bring for meals and excursion activities?

Mexico is most pleasant between September and June. July and August can be very hot & humid. Highland areas like Chiapas and Oaxaca tend to be cooler year-round. Panama has a tropical climate, with dry season from mid-December to mid-April. No visa needed for Panama & Mexico if you hold valid passport from Canada, UK, US, Ireland, Singapore, Australia, South Korea, Japan, or EU member states. All travelers required to have proof of vaccination. We recommend USD 25 to 50 per day for meals and activities.

Is there a option for better accommodation (say 4-star standard) or another tour with the same itinerary?

The hotels used on tour are always centrally located hotels and the entire group stays in the same hotel. For this reason, there is no way to upgrade the hotels as you would then be separated from the group.

for the optional activities, do we have to pay cash each time or there is a better way to settle?

    • Intrepid TravelOperatorWritten June 2022

Optional activities typically have to be booked in destination, and our tour leader can definitely help assist with the booking process. Most activities can be paid for with a credit card.

what sim card do you recommend for this trip? We usually buy local sim cards but for this multi-country trip we will be in one country for a few days or just one day in another, not sure how to gauge what sim cards are appropriate and if there is one "central america" card that would cover all.

what size of luggage would be recommended for this trip? We are planning to take a carryon backpack and a two-wheel checked bag. Is that okay?

    • Intrepid TravelOperatorWritten September 2022

You can purchase a sim card at the start of your trip at the airport or at the welcome meeting. WhatsApp is a popular way to communicate in Latin America. We recommended downloading WhatsApp prior to departure to communicate with your leader and group members during the tour.

    • Intrepid TravelOperatorWritten September 2022

Most travellers prefer to take a small to medium wheeled suitcase. You'll need to be able to carry your own luggage, handle it at airports, take in/out of accommodation. Generally speaking, we recommend you pack as lightly as possible. Airlines generally allow a maximum of 15-20kg for check in luggage and a maximum of 5kg for carry on.
