Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Nairobi to Mount Kenya

You'll leave Nairobi in the early morning and drive through farmland heading toward Chogoria town, where you'll stop for lunch. After that, you'll switch into 4x4 vehicles and head to the bamboo forest edge. From there, the trek begins with a 10 km walk through thick bamboo forest. By evening you'll reach Mount Kenya Bandas for dinner and your first night on the mountain.

    Lunch, Dinner

  2. Day 2

Mount Kenya Bandas to Camp at 3,600m

Following breakfast, you'll organize your porter loads and start trekking upward at a relaxed pace. You can choose between two routes: the scenic path via Lake Ellis with views of Mugi and Ithanguni, or head upstream along the river where the vegetation and foreground scenery are really nice. After lunch by a stream, you'll climb up the left hillside to reach camp around 3,600m, positioned away from the main tourist traffic.

    Meals
Breakfast, Lunch (Lunch on the banks of a stream), Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Trek via Lake Ellis or river route with scenic views
    • Ascend to camp at approximately 3,600m

    Giants Billiards Table
  3. Day 3

Camp at 3,600m to Mintos Hut at 4,200m

An early start has you trekking along a ridge off the main path for about 3 hours until you connect with the standard Chogoria route at roughly 4,100m. The views over Gorges Valley and the Northern Moorlands are quite something. You'll break for lunch at a stream crossing, then walk another hour to Mintos Hut at 4,200m. The afternoon opens up for rest, and a short 10-minute walk to the Temple, a 150-meter cliff face, comes highly suggested.

After that, you'll drop down to Shipton's Camp for breakfast and some rest. Then begins a 5-hour gradual descent through Mackinder's Valley to Old Moses Camp at 3,300m, giving you time to take in the moorlands along the way.

Pita Safari is one of the best guiding company that I encounter as a hiker. Everything was well organized and on time. All questions I asked were answered timely. The guiding team ( Wilson, Pita, and Antony) led by Wilson was very professional, friendly, helpful, and fun to be with. I had a great time with them. I highly recommend them. Thank you Wilson, Pita, Antony and Pita Safari ! Best, Michael

My friend and I had an absolutely fantastic time climbing Mt Kenya, with Pita Safari’s. We climbed via the Chogoria - Sirimon route, which was stunning over 6 days. Our guides (Wilson and Sammy), cook (Peter) and porters (Simon, David and John) were amazing. They took care of our every need, they were very experienced and so knew exactly how to take care of us on our hike. They were so so friendly, happy and we felt very reassured that we were in good hands. We were given more food than we could possibly eat, and it was top notch! We would highly recommend you book with Pita safari’s. And ask for Wilson as your guide!

How challenging is the hiking profile? Are paths very small with steep drops? Do I need to be vertigo-proof? Would vegetarian options be available?

    • Pita SafarisOperatorWritten November 2022

The hiking is moderate. Some parts are a bit slippery going up and down but with the help of hiking poles makes it easy to the most exposed parts. We keep distance to each other especially going steeply down the scree to make it safe to the next person. For vegetarian there will plenty of food available.

    • Pita SafarisOperatorWritten November 2022
