Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Salton Sea to Borrego Springs

    This morning starts with a bike ride past date farms, and you'll spend time alongside the Salton Sea, which is California's largest lake though it has some unusual depth and salinity characteristics. From there, head to Slab City and Salvation Mountain to check out the desert folk art made from concrete and adobe, complete with colorful religious messages painted across the structures. By evening, you'll roll into Borrego Springs where the night sky is really something special for stargazing.

  2. Day 2

    Borrego Springs

    Start your day with a short hike into a colorful slot canyon, then bike through Borrego Springs within Anza Borrego State Park. You'll see desert mountains, fiery ocotillo blossoms, and colorful badlands as you pedal around the valley. Along the way, check out Ricardo Breceda's fascinating sculptures, and after that, you'll head to Azure Palm Hot Springs Resort where you'll stay for the next three nights.

    Joshua Tree National Park

    Cycle through Joshua Tree National Park and pass by its namesake trees along with various cactus species throughout the ride. Keep an eye out for desert wildlife like jackrabbits and bighorn sheep. You'll pedal through the junction where three California ecosystems meet and see geologic formations that rock climbers love. There's an optional climbing excursion available if you want it, and from up there you can see the Salton Sea in the distance.

    Return to Joshua Tree for a ride that's mostly downhill through the south end of the park. Walk through one of the southwest's most prolific cholla cactus gardens and see massive palm trees scattered around. During the ride, watch for desert tortoises and wildflowers as you make your way out of the park. Grab lunch at Cottonwood Springs after you finish.
