Bangkok
You'll arrive in Bangkok and get oriented to Thailand's capital. Start by checking out the Grand Palace and Wat Arun, two of the city's most recognizable temples with their ornate architecture. From there, you can walk through the canals that give Bangkok its 'Venice of the East' nickname, or head to Chatuchak Weekend Market if timing works out. Later, you might visit Jim Thompson's House to learn about the city's history. For meals, you have plenty of choices, from street food stalls to upscale restaurants, and don't miss trying out one of Bangkok's famous spa facilities if you have time.

- Days 5 - 6
River Kwai
Head to Kanchanaburi and start with the War Museum and Cemetery of Allied Prisoners, learning about World War II history. Next, you'll see the Bridge over the River Kwai before taking a long-tailed boat through jungle scenery to your riverside resort. After checking in and having lunch, the afternoon brings a boat ride downstream to Resotel pier to visit Hell Fire Pass Memorial. Return for dinner and then settle in for a 40-minute performance of traditional Mon dances put on by local villagers.

Chiang Rai
Fly to Chiang Rai in Thailand's far north, where you'll be at about 1,387 feet elevation in the Kok River basin. This mountainous area sits near Myanmar and Laos borders, making it a gateway to neighboring countries. You'll explore the region's natural attractions and historical sites, and learn about the different hilltribes that live here. The area has plenty of cultural heritage and antiquities to discover as you get a sense of how local communities live.

Chiang Mai
Travel to Chiang Mai and make your way up the winding mountain roads to Wat Pra That Doi Suthep, a 600-year-old temple sitting near the summit of Doi Suthep mountain. You'll climb the 306-step Naga staircase, named for its dragon-headed serpent design, to reach the temple. Inside, you can see the copper-plated chedi with its five-tier gold umbrella that holds partial relics of Lord Buddha. On a clear day, the hilltop location gives you panoramic views over the whole city of Chiang Mai.

Phuket
Fly to Phuket, Thailand's largest island. You'll find pristine beaches, rocky capes, forested mountains, and farmland with rubber, pineapple, and tapioca plantations spread across the island. Phuket works well as a hub for exploring the surrounding region, and the infrastructure is solid with a major airport, a range of hotels, restaurants from local to international standard, shopping centers, and plenty of entertainment options including marinas, cinemas, and various recreation activities.
