What people love about touring Southern India solo
- South India Revealed
I give the tour guide an excellent review but the tour itself was only okay. We spent two days in places where we should have spent one day. Madurai, Thekkady, and Mysore were those places. We should have spent full two days and two nights in Hampi because there is so much to do. Some of the hotels were pretty bad and didn't have redeeming qualities. The hotel in Varkala was dirty but it was close to the beach. The one in Hampi was dirty but had the cool seating area and hammock things, so that was nice. The hotel in Mysore was disgusting, filthy, and had zero redeeming qualities. Overall, I thought the pacing was a bit off, so realistically I wouldn't recommend the tour to my best friends. I'd also like to say that I don't think my expectations were too high. I'm a seasoned backpacker and traveler in both the developed and undeveloped world, and I live in Pakistan. So it's not like this was my first time visiting a developing country.

What made the tour "excellent" was the group and our guide, Thilip Vijay. This was my 5th Intrepid tour, and as typically the only American, I wish more would do it, especially in this day & age of nationalism, border walls, etc. I have to admit that India can be challenging and often depressing, due to the poverty and trash, but it's worth it. There were some very long rides, and the overnight train isn't my "cup of chai", but we certainly saw all of the highlights, even including a tiger, although I would have loved to have included Hampi on the itinerary. A few suggestions: Don't buy much, if anything, at the various shopping stops, since you can find everything much cheaper elsewhere; Use "WhatsApp" to communicate amongst the group and share photos; Invest in a SteriPen to sterilize the tap water and minimize plastic bottle usage (although I appreciated that most of the lodgings provided potable water). Our guide, Thilip, was very knowledgeable and attentive, even taking me to the doctor once and providing a movie & music for our long van rides. I also highly recommend using both Intrepid and Tour Radar, as the latter saved me a considerable amount and were very responsive. (I was a travel agent for over 30 years, so I know of what I speak. :-)
