  • Days 1-3

    Lisbon & Surroundings

    Drive 6 hours from Madrid to Lisbon through Spain's Extremadura region with a stop in historic Trujillo. Visit the Alfama Quarter early morning before the crowds arrive. Book an evening Fado show in Bairro Alto but plan ahead as good venues fill up fast. Take a day trip to Fatima (2 hours each way) and spend 3-4 hours at the shrine. Best times to visit are early morning or late afternoon to avoid the busiest pilgrim hours.

    Andalusia

    Travel to Seville via medieval Caceres, a UNESCO site. Give yourself two full days in Seville. Visit the Cathedral when it opens at 9 AM to avoid tour groups. For the Real Alcázar book the first morning slot as it gets very hot later. The Mezquita in Cordoba opens at 8:30 AM. Get there first to see those beautiful columns without the crowds. Take the White Villages route to Ronda but be ready for narrow roads and extra photo stops.

    Mediterranean Coast & Barcelona

    Visit the Alhambra in Granada (book months in advance) before driving to Valencia. Spend at least two full days in Barcelona. Start at Park Güell early for the best morning light. Book Sagrada Familia tickets online and visit in the afternoon when sunlight fills the space through the stained glass.

    Northern Spain

    Explore San Sebastian's incredible food scene. Book pintxos tours well ahead as spots fill quickly. In Santiago de Compostela go to the daily pilgrim mass at noon but arrive 30 minutes early for seats. One traveler shared: "The Botafumeiro ceremony is breathtaking but only happens on special occasions—check the cathedral schedule ahead."

    Northern Portugal

    Spend your final days in Porto and the Douro Valley. Book wine tastings early especially during harvest season (September-October).   • Days 1-2

    Northern Spain

    Start in Madrid and travel north through Zaragoza to San Sebastian. Visit the Basilica of Our Lady of The Pilar in Zaragoza early morning before the crowds arrive. Once in San Sebastian, take the funicular up Mount Igueldo for great views. It opens at 10 AM and you'll find shorter lines before noon. La Concha Beach promenade is a perfect spot for an evening stroll.

    Cantabria & Asturias

    Take a 2.5-hour drive west to see Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum. Next up is Santander, where you can join a coastal walking tour. Stop in the medieval town of Santillana del Mar but bring good walking shoes. The cobblestone streets get slippery in wet weather. Plan to reach Covadonga sanctuary before 11 AM to avoid tour groups.

    
  • Days 5-6

    Galicia

    Head to Santiago de Compostela, stopping at Lugo to see its Roman walls. "The morning Pilgrim's Mass at the Cathedral was moving - arrive by 11:30 AM to get a seat, and don't miss seeing the botafumeiro in action."     Porto

    Cross into Portugal and explore Porto. Take the 6 bridges Douro River cruise at 3 PM for the best photo lighting. Visit the port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. "Have dinner in Ribeira district - the bacalhau at Adega São Nicolau was incredible."

    Central Portugal & Lisbon

    Visit Batalha Monastery on your way to Fatima. In Lisbon, get to Belém Tower early to beat the crowds. Ride tram 28 through Alfama but keep an eye on your belongings. Take a quick train trip to see Sintra's colorful palaces.

    Andalusia

    Drive to Córdoba to explore the stunning Mezquita mosque-cathedral. In Seville, visit the Cathedral and Alcázar first thing. Head to Plaza de España around sunset for the best photos. "The flamenco show at Casa de la Memoria was authentic and intimate - book in advance."

  • Days 1-2

    Madrid

    Costa del Sol

    Morocco (Tangier, Casablanca, Marrakech)

    Take the ferry to Morocco. Consider bringing motion sickness medication if needed. Drive to Casablanca and continue to Marrakech.     Fez & Return to Spain

    Discover Fez's ancient medina and craft markets. Book an official guide here. The medina has 9,000 alleyways that confuse even people with maps. Return to Costa del Sol by ferry.

  • Days 17-19

    Granada, Toledo & Madrid

    See the Alhambra in Granada (book morning tickets to avoid crowds), then visit historic Toledo on your way to Madrid. "The best panoramic views of Toledo are from Mirador del Valle. Go just before sunset when the city walls glow golden," recommends a traveler.
