What people love about Belize Tours in August
- Land of Belize
Overall, I would give this trip a 4 ½ mainly because of the location of the last hotel, Rachel’s Land. Other than that everything about this trip was amazing. From the tour guides, to the food, the experience…everything was awesome. Side notes: 1. Fidelio, our amazing tour guide, had to change our itinerary because of the weather so he added the Lamanai trip earlier 2. We brought one towel but never used it because all the hotels provided you with towels. All hotels provided us with soap and shampoo. One, I forget which one, gave us lotion and another a small container of conditioner. 3. You can bring a water bottle if you usually drink a lot of water. All hotels gave us two water bottles, however, some allowed you to refill them. 4. A typical meal would cost around $7-15US-in Caye Caulker a lobster will cost you about $15 US 5. Throughout the trip Fidelio gave us the option to go to supermarkets. Some bathrooms will require you to pay .50US cents to pay for the cleaning service. 6. Definitely bring sun screen lotion and bug spray!!! 7. Bring comfy sneakers and water shoes. 8. Be sure to bring $75 for the COVID test when coming back to the US. Day 1: Belize City-We arranged to have a taxi pick us up with tourradar.com which we immediately saw after going through the airport. The hotel, called Best Western Plus Belize Biltmore Hotel, was about 15 minutes away from the airport and had amazing trees and plants, a restaurant, a gym (with drinking water), a safe and a pool. The rooms were okay but I am not very picky with rooms-I really do not care as long as the location is great and has the basic amenities. Day 2: After getting our free breakfast from Best Western, our group took a boat ride to see birds and then we arrived to Lamanai to see the ancient Mayan city. If you do get Fidelio you will learn A LOT about the native birds of Belize. In addition to Fidelio, Nate our boat driver and Lamanai tour guide, joined us. I have to give them a lot of credit because they had so much patience and knew so much information about EVERYTHING! I do not want to explain too much because I do not want to ruin it but this was definitely a tour you will remember especially if you love nature (trees/plants), animals and history. During the tour you will get lunch; the free lunch in all tours is usually stewed chicken, rice and beans, coleslaw and a plantain. However, we had different variations of stewed chicken in all the tours we were in. Afterwards, we traveled to our 2nd hotel in Crooked Tree called Birds Eye View Lodge, settled in and enjoyed the amazing views from the hotel. Again, when we travel we usually do not stay in the hotel much so location is key for us-we walked around the property and saw the water views, saw that the hotel had many birds on the water, horses in the property, hammocks facing the water, and a small community you could visit if you wished. The hotel also had a small shop that allowed you to sample their blueberry and cashew wine; the area had some cashew trees which Fidelio will show you. They were in the process of building a pool so we couldn’t enjoy that. The hotel, however, did not have a refrigerator but did have a safe. You will get free dinner at the Birds Eye View Lodge. So on this day ONLY you will get free breakfast, lunch and dinner. Day 3: Birds Eye View Lodge will give you free breakfast-Afterwards our group left the hotel around 9AM to a 2hr ride to San Ignacio. Fidelio gave us the option to eat lunch a Belizean restaurant or purchase a tour on our own. Fidelio also made the suggestion to go to AJAW Chocolate for $14 US where you can see the process to make chocolate from cacao beans. They gave you samples to taste; I would say it was a delicious and enjoyable experience. After that we met up with the rest of the group members who went on other tours to visit Cahal Pech, which is a Mayan site in the middle of the city. AMAZING!! Fidelio did not come with us but we did see workers in green shirts who volunteered to guide us through the exhibit for NO FEE!! We did tip our guide-Marco-because he did such an amazing job. Just a side note-everything we know about the Mayans is speculative so what Marco told us can be true based on archeological studies but it was still amazing to hear and see ancient ruins from so long ago. Again, I do not want to describe what we learned because it would ruin the trip but this tour was so much fun! We then arrived to our 3rd hotel called Roleston Beer Garden which had a restaurant, a pool, mini fridge and a safe. Day 4: This was a free day and we made it our prerogative to book the ATM Cave tours with viator. If you do not wish to book tours yourself Fidelio will help you: https://www.viator.com/tours/San-Ignacio/Actun-Tunichil-Muknal-Cave-Tour-and-Picnic/d5083-9526P3. Be sure to bring water shoes or sneakers if you do not mind getting them wet, a pair of socks, shorts or tights that you do no mind getting damaged. I wore water shoes, shorts and a tee shirt. Side Note: you cannot bring anything else because of dumb tourist who damaged precious artifacts in the cave. I always book with viator because sometimes they give you a 10% discount, you can read past reviews, ask questions and get fast responses and are reliable. ATM Caves is a MUST DO IF YOU ARE IN BELIZE!!! It requires you to swim (they do provide you with life jackets), hike, cave/rock climb but you learn so much about the ceremonial practices and see so much history. TRULY AN AMAZING AND UNFORGETABLE EXPEREINCE. Some say that it gets cold in the cave but I did not experience that and I’m always cold. Additionally, our tour guide Hue was so patient and knowledgeable about everything. We also traveled with another tour guide on our bus, Hector, who was so funny and was entertaining us with ‘dad jokes’. A perfect end to a perfect day. Lunch was provided by the tour and it was the same as before (stewed chicken) but with rum punch. Also, special shout out to Ben our driver! Afterwards, Fidelio gave us the option to eat at Ko-ox-han-nah restaurant which was about a 15 min walk from the hotel. We ate, talked about our day, had an amazing time and then took a taxi back for about $5 US. Day 5: We took a 2 hour bus drive to a water taxi to arrive to Caye Caulker. You could pay .50 cents or go to the bathroom on the water taxi. However, the water taxi bathroom had no sink or toilet paper. Traveling on the water taxi was an enjoyable experience because you just see pristine, clear water all throughout. When we arrived Fidelio gave us the option to eat in Bamboozled restaurant (the burrito was huge!) and then we saw our hotel-Rachel’s Land. I thought this was the worse hotel out of all the ones we stayed mainly because of the location. It was a 15-20 minute walk to the beach which was such an inconvenience. If I had the opportunity I would’ve changed my hotel and paid the difference. The hotel did have unlimited water refill, free coffee, a fridge, a safe which required a key to open-weird, a door that did not have a knob and required a key to open. This was another inconvenience because you had to travel with keys everywhere. This hotel was the only hotel that did not offer an iron or hair dryer. The only positive thing about the location was that you could see the many different restaurant options on the FAR end of Caye Caulker because the Split and Iguana side had more expensive restaurants. But again location is key so I really did not enjoy that part of the trip. Another part of Caye Caulker which was surprising to me was the fact that it did not have a shore line. The water was boarded with a cement wall, which I later found out was made to protect the restaurants and hotels from natural disasters. If you wanted to visit a nearby beach called the Northside Beach Club (Koko King) you could get a “free” water taxi but when you arrive you would have to spend about $12 US on food and drinks. Day 7: This was a free day and we decided to book the Hol Chan Full-Day Bucket List Snorkeling and Marine Life Tour using viator: https://www.viator.com/tours/The-Cayes/Hol-Chan-Full-day-Snorkel-Tour-Shark-and-Ray-Turtles-Shipwreck-and-Manatees/d5102-129306P1. We were giving the option to wear life jackets, which is much easier and allows you enjoy the fish, and snorkeling equipment. We were also given lunch: a much dryer stewed chicken, Chinese food like rice. Our tour guides Salam an Art were very helpful, patient and knowledgeable about the area and fish. We made MANY stops and saw all different varieties/colors of fish, we saw nurse sharks, manatees, sting rays and turtles. We also made a stop in an underwater shipwreck and a hotel by the end of Caye Caulker that had sting rays and mini sea horse sanctuary. As with all the tours it was an unforgettable experience-a MUST do if you are in Caye Caulker. We arrived back to our hotel around 3:30, made our LONG trek back to the hotel and Fidelio gave us the option to eat out in a nearby restaurant-I think it was Pelican something. Day 8: This was the day before leaving so we decided to take it easy and just stay at the beach and relax. We took our COVID test and relaxed the whole day. Last Day-Travel back to Belize City on the water taxi and took the regular taxi back to airport-about a 15min drive.
