Temple Tours/Trips in India Reviews
- Classic North India - Golden Triangle with Orchha, Khajuraho & Varanasi !!
We have made a tour, tailor made, around north India. Five friends We have visited Puri and Bhubaneswar in Orissa too. Everything was fantastic and wery intestesting. Many thanks to Manish Jadon our super guide. We shall return in India with MTA
- Royal Rajasthan with Varanasi
This has been an incredible, wonderful experience. Our 19 day, tailor-made tour of Rajasthan, Agra, Khajuraho and Varanasi absolutely exceeded our expectations and was exceptional value for money. The key to this was our incredible driver and guide PRAKASH, who quickly became our big brother and travel guru. Together we travelled thousands of kilometres of northern India. Prakash organised everything for us and anticipated our every need. He knew when a tiger safari was more appropriate than another temple tour! He knew when we needed a loo stop and when we wanted to fall sleep on the journey. He arranged the best and most informative and educated guides. He was extremely flexible and helpful at all times. He really was the key to our incredible tour of India. Our tour was exceptional value for money. The hotels were three star, but always clean and welcoming. Each day we agreed our detailed itinerary with Prakash and each day we were amazed at the wonderful experience we had. Thank you to Prakash and thank you to Payless Tours. We will certainly be back...
- Classic North India: 9 Days Tour of Delhi, Agra, Jaipur & Varanasi
The tour was great; places I went were amazing, the guides in each city were very knowledgeable as well as the drivers. I ended up doing a private tour, which I def. would do again. I made some modifications to the tour - flights instead of train and 4 star properties. Only thing: When booking make sure that all facilities are operational at hotels, my hotels in Jaipur and Udaipur were not fully open. Also The Fern in Udaipur is next to a highway, with the pool overlooked by drivers, not a great location, especially if you are thinking of using the pool which I had planned. Other than that, the meals at the hotels were fantastic, and again the drivers and guides were exceptional.
What our customers ask about Temple Tours in India
What are the must-see temple highlights on an India temple tour?
India's most notable temples range from the grand to the intimate. The Meenakshi Temple in Madurai stands out with 14 vibrant gopurams while the Khajuraho Temples showcase detailed stone carvings including their famous erotic sculptures. In Amritsar the Golden Temple draws visitors to its serene waters and in Ranakpur the Jain Temple features exactly 1444 carved pillars. Modern architectural styles appear at Delhi's Lotus Temple while ancient traditions continue at Varanasi's Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Many tours connect these sites with stays at upscale hotels like the Fortune Select Global in Delhi or Royal Orchid in Jaipur. As one TourRadar traveler noted "The Meenakshi temple was absolutely breathtaking with its detailed sculptures and spiritual atmosphere - definitely a highlight of our temple tour."
How long should I plan for a comprehensive temple tour in India?
To properly explore India's temple heritage plan for 10-16 days of travel. The southern circuit through Chennai Mahabalipuram Thanjavur and Madurai typically takes 8-10 days. Northern routes covering spiritual centers like Varanasi and Amritsar need 5-7 days minimum. One TourRadar traveler shared their experience: "Our 10-day South India temple tour with Real Viaggi India was perfect - we had enough time at each temple to really absorb the atmosphere and learn about the history."
When is the best time to visit temples in India?
Temple visits in India work best between October and March. During these months temperatures hover between 20-25°C in key sites like Varanasi and Khajuraho making exploration comfortable. These conditions suit extended visits to expansive complexes like the Meenakshi Temple and Khajuraho monuments. Luxury hotels such as the Taj in Varanasi and Ramada in Jaipur provide convenient bases during this peak season. A TourRadar visitor confirmed "We visited during February and the weather was perfect for temple tours not too hot or crowded."
How accessible are remote temple sites in India?
Temple accessibility in India varies dramatically by location. Urban temples in Delhi Agra and Jaipur welcome visitors with easy road access. Remote sites present more challenges - Kedarnath requires a 14-kilometer trek or helicopter ride and the Char Dham temples open only during specific seasons with permit requirements. Hotels like the Neemrana Fort Palace serve as launching points for temple expeditions. One TourRadar traveler noted: "The journey to Kedarnath temple was challenging but incredibly rewarding with overnight stays at the comfortable Hotel Pushpraj in Guptkashi."
How physically demanding are temple tours in India?
Most temple tours require modest physical effort rated "Easy" to "Moderate" with daily walks of 2-3 hours on uneven ground. Visitors should prepare for barefoot walking on warm stone surfaces and climbing stairs. Sites like Khajuraho and the Madurai complex need several hours to explore properly. Hotels such as the Clarks Shiraz in Agra offer rest between visits. A TourRadar participant shared: "While the walking wasn't strenuous there were many steps and uneven surfaces to navigate especially at older temple sites."
Which regions are best for temple architecture tours in India?
Tamil Nadu in South India leads in temple architecture featuring remarkable sites in Mahabalipuram Thanjavur and Madurai. North India counters with spiritual landmarks like Amritsar's Golden Temple and Varanasi's sacred sites. Quality hotels including the Hyatt Amritsar and Sarovar Premiere in Jaipur position visitors near key temples. According to one TourRadar traveler: "The temples of Tamil Nadu were incredible - each one unique with fascinating architectural details and spiritual significance."
