Last year my family and I went on this tour and it turned out to be such a wonderful and memorable experience. The itinerary through Italy, Albania, Montenegro and Dubrovnik was so well put together and the small group size made it feel more personal and enjoyable. We were especially amazed by Albania and Montenegro, Kotor in particular was a hidden gem. It’s still untouched by heavy tourism but is clearly growing fast as a destination. Huge thanks to the guides and the team who made the trip so smooth and special for us. It’s a journey we’ll always remember.

This Italian tour was an absolute dream! From exploring Rome’s Colosseum and Florence to marveling at Michelangelo’s David in Florence, every moment was filled with history and culture. A stop in Venice and Tuscany brought gondola rides, charming canals and stunning countryside views and delicious wine tastings. Ending in Pompeii and Amalfi - the cherry on top. The itinerary was well-paced, with a great mix of guided tours and free time. The accommodations were comfortable, and the food—authentic pasta, espresso, and gelato—was incredible! Overall, this tour exceeded my expectations, blending history, beauty, and unforgettable experiences. Highly recommended!

Best time to visit Croatia and Italy
- Spring 2026
Spring is ideal for cycling the Adriatic coast, especially if you want comfortable temperatures for exploring medieval towns. A great route stretches from Trieste to Pula along quiet coastal paths where you can stop at interesting spots like the Se'covlje salt pans. Many travelers combine Venice and Croatia - starting with peaceful morning walks through Venice before the crowds fill the streets, then heading south to places like Rovinj where spring flowers add color to the old stone streets. Our customers particularly enjoy routes that mix truffle hunting in Motovun's forests with wine tasting in the Goriška Hills as the vines start their growing season.

- Summer 2026
Summer opens up fantastic water-based tours between these countries. The Zadar to Venice sailing routes let you discover hidden swimming spots in the Kvarner Gulf islands before visiting busy ports like Rovinj and also Pula. The long summer days work well for land tours too - you'll explore Split's Roman sites in the cool morning hours, swim at Sunj Beach on Lopud Island mid-day and watch the sun set over Dubrovnik's walls with a drink in hand. Many guests book tours with stays on private islands near Rovinj; it's a clever way to avoid peak season crowds while keeping easy access to mainland sites.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Fall brings together food, wine and perfect weather for tours connecting northern Italy with Croatia's Istrian peninsula. You can start your day at Venice's markets, spend afternoons visiting family wineries in Slovenia's Goriška region and end up in Croatia's truffle country. The food-focused tours are particularly special - you'll cook with local families in Venice, try just-harvested oysters from Lim Bay and taste wines in Motovun's historic cellars. What works really well in autumn is how cultural visits mix with harvest activities - you might help pick grapes in the morning then explore Pula's Roman amphitheater as the afternoon sun gives everything a warm glow.

Wondering How to Best Combine Croatia and Italy in One Trip?
Getting between these countries is actually pretty straightforward especially if you focus on key spots like Rome Venice Dubrovnik and Split. The ferries across the Adriatic are really convenient for connecting Italian and Croatian coastal cities. If you're keen to explore those gorgeous Dalmatian islands Split makes an excellent base with regular ferries heading out to the islands throughout the day. There's this great 10-day tour from Dubrovnik to Venice by Intrepid Travel that takes you through all the highlights including Split and those stunning Plitvice Lakes.
Looking for Hidden Gems in Croatia?
If you want to dodge the tourist crowds head to Motovun it's this incredible medieval town up on a hill where you can actually join truffle hunting demos and taste amazing truffle-infused local specialties. Grožnjan's another special spot - it's filled with artists their galleries and workshops really give you a feel for the local creative scene. While everyone knows Plitvice Lakes try checking out Krka National Park instead where Skradinski Buk creates this massive natural pool with spectacular waterfalls. The Balkan Extended tour from Venice to Dubrovnik includes Krka and it's absolutely worth seeing those dramatic falls and unique wildlife.
What Local Food and Wine Experiences Shouldn't I Miss?
Istria's really the place to go for truffles you can visit local farms watch demonstrations and taste these incredible truffle-infused products. There's this great Premium Venice to Split tour where you'll try fritaja a local Croatian omelet with truffles at a family farm in Motovun. Down on the Pelješac Peninsula they make this amazing red wine called Plavac Mali using traditional methods on these incredibly rocky slopes. The Balkan Extended tour actually takes you to a local winery there. In Venice you've got to try cicchetti these delicious small bites served in bàcari local bars it's such a fun social thing especially at lunch. The Premium Rome to Split tour includes a proper cicchetti lunch experience.
How Reliable is the Ferry Service Between Countries?
The ferries run really well especially during peak season July through August but schedules can shift a bit in different seasons. It's smart to book ahead particularly May-June and September to avoid any hassles. Booking online saves you from queuing and guarantees your spot. There's this great tour by G Adventures The Dalmatian Coast that includes an overnight ferry from Ancona to Split with proper sleeping cabins included.
