Following a short transfer, you'll cycle along rice terraces with a steep climb up to Kintamani plantations and on toward Batur volcano's crater rim. That's about 12.5 miles of riding, and you'll regroup to hear about the tough section ahead. If the climb feels too hard, the support vehicle can take you straight to lunch. Weather allowing, you'll get views of one of Bali's larger volcanic lakes. After lunch comes a short but sharp descent to your hotel at the volcano's base. The rest of the afternoon is yours to relax or try off-road cycling on narrow sandy trails across lava fields.

Riding through Bondalem, Tianyar, and Kubu villages, you'll see everyday local life. A refreshment stop on the beach breaks up the ride before you continue on flat roads to Ponjok Batu, an ocean-facing temple built from black stone. After passing through Singaraja town, you'll reach Lovina and transfer to your hotel in Bedugul.

From there you'll enjoy views of a twin lake before cycling downhill for the rest of the day with nice views across the north coast. You'll stop at Bhrama Arama Vihara, the only Buddhist monastery in Bali, then relax in the open-air pools at Banjar Hot Springs nearby. After lunch, you'll cycle along the coast to your beachfront hotel in Pemuteran, where the rest of the day is free.

The island has coral gardens and tropical fish that you can see while snorkeling (diving is available for an extra cost). After lunch, you'll freshen up before transferring to Gilimanuk Harbour to catch the ferry to Ketapang Harbour in Java. Then it's about a three-hour drive to Bondowoso.

The route starts flat until you reach the volcano's base, then climbs through coffee plantations on some steep sections of partially broken paved roads. You'll take things slowly to enjoy the scenery, with a light lunch along the way. After about 12.5 miles you'll regroup before the steepest part begins. If it gets too hard, you can ride with the support vehicle instead. You'll stop to visit one of Indonesia's largest coffee plantations before finishing your ride in Jampit Catimor, a remote village where you'll stay in a local homestay on a coffee plantation.

At the summit you'll find a 655-foot deep crater lake filled with steaming acidic water and surrounded by sulfur mines. The trek is demanding with poor trail conditions and toxic fumes. After you return to the start, you'll get back on your bike and ride down to Ketapang in time for lunch. The afternoon is yours to rest after such an early start.

You'll continue to Rajegwesi Beach, the gateway to Meru Betiri National Park and a fishing village where you might see fresh catch being unloaded. Tonight you'll camp on the beach with basic facilities including two-person tents, mats, sleeping bags, and basic toilets and cold showers.

    • Exodus Adventure TravelsOperatorWritten May 2023

Regarding our Cycling Indonesia's Islands, there are no e-bikes unfortunately. This trip is graded as moderate as the vast majority of the rides are moderate with mostly flat terrain. There are, however, two potentially very challenging days. The harder rides include the ride to the top of Batur volcano (day 3) and, especially, on the ride going up Mt. Ijen (Day 7). The daily elevations are listed on each trip day so you can be the judge of your ability here. There is, however, always the opportunity to jump in the bus at any point if necessary so there is no pressure to complete these two rides.
