- Gladys· March 6th, 2020Overall, we enjoyed our tour of India. The culture there is so different than any other place we have travelled, leaving even seasoned travelers a bit shell shocked. Highlights were the Taj, never expected to be so impressed with it as we have seen a lot of architectural wonders in our travels, and the night spent in the village of Tordi Garh. Downside, some of the hotels were not too clean, especially in Varanasi. That hotel was foul. We did book a basic trip, and were expecting some rougher travel, but not that bad. Also, the night trains were a bit of a trial. It would have been nice to be able to upgrade to better berths. And finally, out of 7 people, 5 got sick. The overall itinerary and the cities we visited were good but I have many points of feedback: - Most important: rooms in winter should have basic necessities like heating and hot water. - People who book the basic tour should NOT have to participate in what were listed as “optional” activities. Many sales pitches happened on this tour and no one was interested. Would have preferred to spend more time at the sites and having free time to see additional things. - Tour guide should have discretion with the itinerary when scheduling issues happen (we spent 19 hours on a train). We all wanted to see the Red Fort in Agra but didn’t have time because of the train delays. Then we were rushed through the Amber Fort only to sit through a jewelry sales pitch?? This was very frustrating. - People who book the basic tour do so expecting to have free time to explore and recommendations for what to see. Very little of both happened. Many of us booked outside day tours because the tour was missing basic details of the cities and major sites. - Related, I would have preferred the tour guide giving details about the history, background, and social issues of each place we visited. I am used to this from other tours. Perhaps there should be one person responsible for tour logistics and one person actually guiding the tour. Our tour guide spent a lot of time on logistics because of traveling challenges. - Local tour guides at the major sites were lacking. I had much better tour guides when I booked through TripAdvisor, which I did 3 times on this trip. - We weren’t given the daily itinerary each day so that we could plan what to participate in as far at the “optional” activities. All of the activities seemed to be mandatory. That was not how it was described in the tour description. Overall I would not recommend this tour or participate again on an Intrepid tour. I’ve been on several long tours through Mexico, South America, Southeast Asia, Iceland, Israel etc. I am used to the unpredictability of travel and not always being comfortable, but this tour seemed unnecessarily so. All accommodations while on tour will be included, there is only 1 breakfast and 1 dinner included. All other meal will need to be bought however, the leader is around to make suggestions and we typically stay very centrally located so there will be options available. At this time we do not offer the option to upgrade the train tickets.

In Varanasi, the itinerary includes a guided walking tour of the Old City and a sunrise boat ride on the Ganges, where you will witness various religious rituals along the riverbanks. However, the evening Ganges Aarti ceremony is not specifically included in the program. That said, the Aarti ceremony, held every evening at the Ghats, is a popular experience in Varanasi. If you are interested in attending, your tour leader can assist in arranging an optional visit during your free time, as this ceremony is a significant part of the local spiritual life.

Upgrades are not always possible. We would prefer everyone in the group to stay together especially at our pre-selected accommodations. As for the train, upgrades are not something that we can pre-book and would have to be done in destination if there is availbility.
