- Steven· April 19th, 2023This crew made my Kyushu bike trip a continuing delight -- up and down, mealtimes and night-times, sunshine and rain. The pre-planning worked perfectly for routes and the onsen we stopped at. Most important, Lloyd watched out for me like an always happy and rock-steady buddy even as I slowed down to a walk over some of our steeper climbs. I'm 81. The guides simply applauded loud when I deserved it and then accommodated quietly when I needed the support. The route was breathtakingly beautiful -- miles of Kyushu cherry blossoms, countryside, mountains, and river-bank former rail cuts. Carefully chosen shrines and historic sites and their significance really extended my academic's appreciation of Japan. Now I have to convince my teenage grandkids to come along on my next trips.Show more

Asked on June 12th, 2023Is July the last date you have available, or is September available with decent weather? Also, how technical is the mountain biking? I used to be a moderate rider but after a few crashes, I'm much more cautious. Just wondering if I could handle it.

Traveler•Written June 2023One to two people for now, depending on how technical it is. Do you have any cycling or hiking trips in the 'Stans?
- SpiceRoads CyclingOperator•Written June 2023
We've only Mountain Biking Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan trip on the areas of the Stans. This trip is designed for the experienced cyclist with a high level of fitness. The lack of oxygen at the high altitudes we'll be cycling at, as well as the climbs we'll be doing, means that this is a tough trip, and you'll enjoy it much more if you have a good level of stamina and fitness. The distances and gradient each day are not extreme, but getting into the best shape possible for the trip will ensure you get the most from your holiday. The road surfaces are a mix of paved and dirt roads and a few sections of single track. The paths will be very rocky in sections, and so good technical skills on a mountain bike are necessary.

Traveler•Written June 2023We live at 2300m and hike to 4300m and sometimes bike to 4300m in summer so the altitude shouldn't bother us. I did a solo (guided) cycling trip last year in Sikkim, India with no issues (except being very slow ;) Our summer is getting booked up, though, so we're looking for something in early Sept. at this point.
