Later, you'll head to where the Danube meets the Wörnitz river, where an old landing stage sits as a reminder of how important this waterway was for shipping back in the day. Donau-Ries to Augsburg
This first full day of cycling takes you through floodplains with wide river arms cutting through valleys and wet meadows that feel wild and open. You'll follow the cycle path that runs alongside the Lech river, pedaling through cultivated pastureland until you reach Augsburg. This city has serious history behind it as the Roman town of Augusta Vindelicorum, and later the Fugger trading family built their wealth and influence here. By evening, you'll have covered good distance and gotten a real feel for how the land shapes itself along the water.

Augsburg to Landsberg
The cycling stays flat as you move through the Augsburg city forest and then into the Lechtal heaths, an area where rare animals and plants find their home. Around the Lech weir in Landsberg, you'll find several spots perfect for stopping to catch your breath and take in the surroundings. As evening comes on, the sun hits the colorful historic houses and creates this really nice golden light that makes the whole old town feel peaceful. It's the kind of day where you can go at your own pace and enjoy the natural rhythm of pedaling and resting.

Landsberg to Schongau
You'll cycle into the Pfaffenwinkel region, which sits at the heart of Bavaria and is absolutely full of water and monasteries. Passing by these religious buildings one after another gives you a sense of how important faith and community were in shaping this landscape. As you keep moving, the Alps start showing up on the horizon, getting bigger and closer. By the time you reach Schongau, an old town with a historic wall that's kept most of its original structure intact, you'll feel like you've moved from the gentle river valleys into something more dramatic.

Schongau to Füssen

Mountain ranges surround the town, and lakes dot the area with that quiet, reflective quality that makes you want to slow down. The High Castle sits above with its distinctive illusion paintings, and the whole place carries that romantic, fairy-tale quality that captivated King Ludwig when he dreamed up his palace visions.
