Itinerary
- Day 1
Taipei to Sun Moon Lake / Taichung
You'll leave Taipei at 7:30am and travel to Sun Moon Lake, Taiwan's largest freshwater lake. After getting settled, there's free time to grab lunch around the area. In the afternoon, a scenic bus tour takes you through Ita Thao village, past Ci'en Pagoda and Xuanzang Temple, and to Wenwu Temple where you can walk around and see the views. From there, you'll transfer to your hotel in either Sun Moon Lake or Taichung depending on your booking.

- Day 2
Sun Moon Lake/Taichung to Tainan to Kaohsiung
Start the day with breakfast before heading by bus to Tainan, which happens to be Taiwan's oldest city. You'll walk through Fort Zeelandia and then spend time wandering Anping Old Street, checking out the historic buildings and trying some local food along the way. Later you'll drive to Kaohsiung to visit Fo Guang Shan Monastery, where there's a 36-meter golden Buddha Amitabha statue. A monk will meet with you to talk about Buddhist teachings and answer questions. After that, you'll head to your hotel in central Kaohsiung for the night.

- Day 3
Kaohsiung to Kenting National Park to Zhiben
Head south to Kenting National Park, Taiwan's first and most well-known park. You'll stop at Maopitou to see the distinctive rock formation that looks like a cat's head, then check out Chuanfan Rock (Sail Rock) and the historic Eluanpi Lighthouse. Longpan Park gives you wide views of the Pacific Ocean across the water. As you drive along the South Link Highway, you'll pass through rural landscapes with rice fields and small towns. Later that evening you'll arrive in Zhiben, Taitung, where you can relax at a hot spring resort known for its carbonate springs, 75°F/24°C year-round.

Zhiben to East Coast National Scenic Area to Hualien to Yilan
You'll travel along Taiwan's east coast, which has some of the most untouched scenery on the island. At Xiaoyeliu (Fugang Geopark), there are unusual rock formations created by erosion and geological processes. Next is Sanxiantai, where you'll walk across a cross-sea bridge and see coral reefs below. Shitiping has terraces carved out by sea erosion that are worth walking around and photographing. After all this driving and exploring, you'll board a train heading to Yilan for a more relaxed ride. By evening you'll settle into your hot spring hotel in Jiaoxi.

- Day 5
Yilan to Taipei
This morning you'll have breakfast before heading to the King Car Kavalan Whisky Distillery to learn how they make their award-winning whisky using pure mountain spring water from the area. After touring the distillery, you'll go to the National Center for Traditional Arts where they've preserved old Taiwanese architecture and hold live performances. There are workshops where you can try puppet theatre or learn traditional crafts hands-on. By late afternoon, you'll board a bus back to Taipei, arriving at Howard Hotel around 5:00pm to end your trip.
