Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Bilbao to Sotres

You'll meet at Bilbao Airport at 2pm and travel together toward the mountains. The drive takes you to Potes first, then continues higher to Sotres, which sits as the highest village in Picos de Europa. Hotel Rural Casa Cipriano will be your home for the week - it's a family-run place with comfortable rooms and a restaurant where they cook traditional Asturian food. Plan to settle in and get your bearings for what's ahead.

    Eastern Picos Walk

After breakfast at the hotel, you'll head out for your first walk through the eastern massif. You transfer to Jito de Escarandi and then climb toward Caseton de Andara, where you get views looking out over Majada Jazuca Valley and toward the Cantabrian coast. From there the route takes you over Collado Tramacondiu and around Macondiu Peak, walking through Valdediezma forest before you head back down to Sotres. It's a solid day on foot to get used to the terrain.

    Valdediezma to Urdon Walk

A short drive gets you to Jito de Escarandi again, but from a different angle. This time you walk through beech forest and open pastures heading down into Sobra Valley. Once you reach Treviso, there's a lunch break. After eating, you continue along Balcon de Pilatos where you get good views looking into Urdon Gorge. By late afternoon a bus brings you back to Sotres, so it's less demanding than the previous day but still covering nice ground.

Cable Car and Aliva Valley Walk

You drive to Fuente De, stopping at Santo Toribio de Liebana Monastery on the way. Then you board the cable car, which rises 1,000 metres and opens up views across the national park in all directions. Walking down through alpine meadows, you follow the Aliva glacial valley with a picnic lunch somewhere along the route. There's a visit to the abandoned Las Manforas mines in the afternoon. Later that evening, local astronomer Rebecca Fernandez leads a stargazing session, so bring warm layers for the mountain night.

By midday you reach Tielve where there's a Cabrales cheese tasting and lunch. In the evening, you board a scenic bus ride and then hike for about an hour up to Pico de la Tabla. That's where you'll have a special dinner and observe a solar eclipse with astronomer Rebecca, weather permitting.

The main event is walking through Divine Gorge, which cuts down over 1,000 metres deep into the landscape. The path literally runs along cliff faces with tunnels cut into the rock and bridges spanning the narrowest sections. This six-hour round trip walk is considered one of the highlights of the entire region, so go at a steady pace and bring water and snacks for the full day.

Moving forward, you walk up to a saddle viewpoint where Naranjo de Bulnes appears - that rust-coloured mountain rising nearly 2,519 metres straight up from the surrounding terrain. This was my first tour, having always traveled solo, and I was pleasantly surprised. The group size of 6 was perfect for being able to develop close friendships and having all the lodging and transportation taken care of was so welcome. Lastly, the guide, Renske, is truly a natural. I don't think she could have been any better, throughout the trip. She was always in good spirits, and would go out of her way to answer questions, even researching when she didn't know the answer. Top notch all around!

The trip was excellent. From the pick-up, transportation to/from hiking trails, daily briefing, hiking itself and meals everything well organised and went smooth. The guide Lucas was very helpful and everyone was well taken care of. Andorra Pyrenees are beautiful and hiking was not too challenge, moderate level so everyone who is relatively fit could follow.

My Camino de Santiago de Compostela was amazing! However, I am not sure if we got the list of items we needed for the Camino from Tourradar or Explore, but both myself and my friend way overpacked and had to pay extra for luggage. Otherwise, the experience is one of a lifetime! Thanks
