Itinerary
- Day 1
Oaxaca City to Cuajimoloyas
You'll leave Oaxaca City and drive through the Tlacolula Valley for about two hours, passing farmland and traditional villages along the way. From there, you're trekking the Cueva Iglesia trail for five to six hours near San Miguel del Valle, where you'll get panoramic views and see cave formations. By late afternoon you'll arrive in the mountain village of Cuajimoloyas and have a traditional local meal before settling into mountain cabins for the night.

Cuajimoloyas to Amatl\u00e1n
After a hearty breakfast at your cabin in Cuajimoloyas, you're tackling the Yatini Trail, a challenging 26-kilometer trek that takes about seven hours. You'll experience big altitude changes, forests, and wildflower meadows before reaching Amatlán. This culturally rich village has an authentic local restaurant where you'll eat, and there's a beautiful church and village museum to check out. You'll stay overnight in comfortable accommodations here.

Amatl\u00e1n to Capul\u00e1lpam
You start with a locally-prepared breakfast, then trek the Las Minas Trail to explore the region's mining heritage, including a 150-meter walk through an actual historic mine. After you return, there's lunch with local chefs. Later you'll travel to Capulálpam village where you'll do a temazcal ceremony with Manos que Curan, experiencing steam, medicinal herbs, and ancient purification practices before settling in for the evening.

You'll have a locally-prepared breakfast, then choose your trail. The longer option is the 18-kilometer Embudo Trail through Los Sabinos park with mesophilic forest and lots of biodiversity, or go for the shorter 8-kilometer Los Molinos Trail with views of the rock formation La Ventana and walks by the river. Both trails meet up at a riverside spot for a farewell lunch with fresh local food, where you'll toast with new friends and reflect on your Sierra Norte trip before heading out.
