Itinerary
- Day 1
Christchurch to Kaikoura
Your hotel pickup happens early, then you'll head to Christchurch train station for the coastal route down to Kaikoura. The train ride itself is worth the time, running right along the water with great views the whole way. Once you arrive in Kaikoura, a shuttle takes you to your accommodation so you can get settled in and grab lunch if you're hungry. The fishing village has a relaxed feel to it, and there's time to walk around and get your bearings before dinner.

- Day 2
Kaikoura
This is your whale watching day. You'll be heading out on a boat trip in the morning to see what's in the water around Kaikoura. The marine life here is really varied, so you might see dolphins and sharks, but the main draw is the sperm whales. They hang around these waters closer to shore than you'd normally find them, which makes this spot pretty special for spotting them. Plan on spending several hours on the water, so bring sunscreen and a jacket. After you're back on land, the rest of the day is free time.

Landmarks Kaikoura Marine Area - Day 3
Kaikoura to Christchurch
You've got the morning to yourself in Kaikoura. There's a beach to walk along, local shops to browse, or you could grab coffee at one of the cafes and just watch the water. By early afternoon, the shuttle picks you up and takes you back to the train station for your return trip on the Coastal Pacific heading back to Christchurch. The scenery on the way back is just as good as the journey down. Once you're in Christchurch, another shuttle transfer gets you back to your hotel in time for dinner.
