Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Lamezia Terme to Tropea

After you land in Lamezia Terme, a coach will take you along the scenic coast to your hotel in Tropea. The town sits on rugged limestone cliffs right above the Tyrrhenian Sea, so you'll get views from the moment you arrive. By evening, you can settle in and get oriented to your base for the week.

  2. Day 2

    Capo Vaticano - Tropea

Start the day checking out the Capo Vaticano area, which locals call Calabria's 'panoramic balcony' because of the emerald waters, sandy beaches, and dramatic cliffs. From there, head into Tropea itself, where you'll walk through narrow medieval streets and see late medieval palaces and churches sitting right on the clifftop. The whole area has that feeling of history layered right into the landscape.

    Calabria Interior - Cosenza

This optional trip takes you inland to the basilica and monastery of St. Francis of Paola, who's the patron saint of fishermen. You'll see the reliquary chapel, the cloister, and various miracle sites. After that, continue on to Cosenza, which is where Calabria's cultural heart really is. The medieval old town there has a Gothic cathedral and a city theater, so there's plenty to walk through and take in.

  4. Day 4

    Tropea

You have flexibility here to either relax at the resort or sign up for an optional boat trip to the Aeolian Islands. If you go for the boat, you'll head out about 30 nautical miles offshore to these volcanic islands. The excursion stops at Lipari and Vulcano, and the boat also cruises past Stromboli so you get views of it from the water. It's a full day if you decide to do it.

You'll walk through the cathedral and the Archaeological Museum, then spend time on the Matteotti promenade and the Corso Garibaldi shopping street. On the way back along the Costa Viola coast, stop in Scilla to see the fishing district of Chianalea and Castello Ruffo. Later, continue north to Palmi and visit an important ethnographic museum there.

  6. Day 6

    Serra San Bruno - Pizzo

Travel inland to the wooded Serre plateau and Serra San Bruno, a small town at 790 meters altitude. It's where St. Bruno of Cologne founded a hermitage back in 1091, so the place has real quietness to it. Then head to the medieval village of Pizzo, which sits on steep cliffside banks. You'll see Castello Aragonese and the unusual cave church of Piedigrotta, plus wander the alleyways. Try the local tartufo ice cream while you're there.

Visit a local farm where they produce onions, n'duja (traditional Calabrian salami), wine, and cheese, with tastings of authentic specialties included. You'll also explore caves in Zungri and see the Church of St. Mary. The rest of the day, you can either relax or spend time with other travelers, maybe over dinner.

The tour guide was great, organized, highly motivated, extensive knowledge. The hotels were ok, the rooms varied, obviously the cheap option within the hotels. The choice of flights was catastrophic. Instead of direct flights, there were stopovers with long waiting times, we were practically on the road for a whole day each time. The flight from Vienna to Edinborough also had to be rebooked, but this was not the responsibility of the travel agency.
