    Your Greek adventure kicks off in Athens today. Depending on when you arrive, you'll have the rest of the day to wander around and get a feel for the city at your own pace. It's a good chance to shake off travel and maybe grab dinner somewhere local.

  2. Day 2

    Athens to Lagadia

    This morning you'll head to the Peloponnese peninsula. The drive takes you through some interesting territory where you'll see the Corinth Canal at Isthmia, then stop to check out the theater at Epidaurus. After that, you'll spend time in Nafplio learning about modern Greek history before finishing the day in Lagadia near Olympia. The whole route covers about 290 km.

    Lagadia to Ioannina

    Today focuses on Olympia, where the Olympic Games started back in 776 BC. You'll walk through the Sacred Grove and see the Temple of Zeus along with the treasure houses, thermal baths, and gymnasiums scattered around. The stadium's there too if you want to check that out. Before leaving, there's time to walk through the town itself, then you'll head toward Ioannina by way of a spectacular suspension bridge. This leg covers about 390 km.

    Ioannina to Paralia

    Ioannina sits 500 meters up on a lake and has a lot of university town energy to explore. You'll walk the old town area with its Ottoman heritage and tour the fortress. On the way here from Olympia, you'll pass through Metsovo, a distinctive village on the Pindos Mountains that's worth a stop. By evening you'll be in Paralia for a more relaxed time. The drive is about 290 km total.

If you go that route, you'll travel through ancient Macedonia, where Alexander the Great came from, and see an underground royal mausoleum with artifacts reflecting ancient Egyptian influences. That side trip is about 120 km if you choose it.

You'll explore one of the complexes and get surrounded by the sandstone landscape that makes this area so distinctive. The drive is around 225 km, and the whole setting really shows how diverse Greece's geography is.

    Meteora to Athens

    This morning you'll drive to the Oracle of Delphi, a site steeped in mythology and history. You'll walk through ancient Delphi, see the treasure houses and Archaeological Museum, and visit the theater. The location itself is remarkable, tucked into a natural landscape in a way that made ancient Greeks consider it the center of the world. From there, you'll head back to Athens in the late afternoon. The round trip is about 360 km.

    The tour guide was great, organized, highly motivated, extensive knowledge. The hotels were ok, the rooms varied, obviously the cheap option within the hotels. The choice of flights was catastrophic. Instead of direct flights, there were stopovers with long waiting times, we were practically on the road for a whole day each time. The flight from Vienna to Edinborough also had to be rebooked, but this was not the responsibility of the travel agency.
