Departure
Your Laos adventure begins today as you head out for the land of a million elephants. You'll arrive the next day, so plan on traveling through the night or with a connection. Return flights can be arranged whenever you need them, so let your travel advisor know your preferred dates.

Arrival in Laos
You land in Laos and your personal German-speaking tour guide meets you at the airport, then takes you to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day getting settled and relaxing after your flight.

Luang Prabang
Starting in Luang Prabang, begin with a cooking class at Tamnak Lao restaurant where you'll shop at the market and learn to prepare traditional Laotian dishes. After that, visit the oldest temples like Wat Sene and Wat Xiengthong, then head to Wat Mai, Wat Visoun, and Wat Aham. Browse the Kinnaly Gallery to learn about ethnic minorities, climb Mount Phousi for sunset views over the Mekong, and finish by checking out the night market.

Pak-Ou Caves - Kuang Si Waterfalls
Early morning, you'll watch orange-clad monks collecting food donations around the city. Later, board a boat on the Mekong through beautiful landscapes to the Pak-Ou Caves with thousands of golden Buddha statues. Stop in Ban Xanghai village to see how local rice wine is made. In the afternoon, head to the Khuang Si waterfalls and visit ethnic minority villages along the way. Take a refreshing swim in one of the turquoise cascades, then watch the sunset from Wat Siphouthabath.

Plain of Clay Jars
Leave Luang Prabang and drive about 300 km through gentle hilly landscape to Xieng Khuang. You'll reach the Plain of Clay Jars, an archaeological site featuring hundreds of massive stone jars up to 2.50 meters high and weighing up to 6 tons each. Today you'll visit one of the three accessible sites and walk through these ancient wonders.

Plain of Clay Jars to Vang Vieng
You'll travel from the Plain of Clay Jars to Vang Vieng today, making stops in smaller villages along the way to see how people live in the countryside. Start with a short and easy hike through the landscape, then visit Tam Xang cave. From there, you'll walk through rice fields and pass by karst mountains before reaching Vang Vieng in the afternoon, where dramatic mountains rise all around the town.

Vang Vieng to Vientiane
Travel south to Vientiane, the quiet capital of Laos, located directly on the Mekong. In the afternoon, take a sightseeing tour visiting Wat Sisaket, the oldest temple in the city, and Wat Prakeo, the royal temple that once housed the Emerald Buddha. Also see That Luang Stupa national shrine and the Laotian Arc de Triomphe.

- Day 8
Phou Khao Khouay National Park
Leave Vientiane and drive to Ban Hatkhai, a small village on the edge of Phou Khao Khouay National Park. Meet a local guide who'll take you in an off-road vehicle to the Tad Xay waterfall and nearby Pha Xay waterfall. Enjoy a picnic break and cool off with a dip in Tad Xay. Then hike approximately two hours through the national park to the Nam Mang River, where a boat takes you back to Ban Hatkhai. On the return to Vientiane, visit typical old Laotian villages of ethnic minorities and try local snacks at a market.

Bolavens Plateau
Fly early morning from Vientiane to Pakse in the Champasak region in the lesser-known south. Meet your local guide at the airport and drive to the Bolavens Plateau, a cool and fertile area where coffee is grown. Visit the spectacular 200-meter-high Tad Fane waterfall, the most beautiful on the plateau. In the afternoon, visit villages of ethnic minorities like the Katu and Alak tribes, known for their distinctive facial tattoos. Spend the night at Sinouk Coffee Resort in the middle of the coffee plantations.

Bolavens Plateau to Si Phan Don
Head to the Mekong Falls, stopping at the Pha Suam waterfall along the way. Visit Wat Phou temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved relics of the Khmer period, around 200 years older than Angkor. In the afternoon, reach Don Khong, the main island of the Si Phan Don (four thousand islands) region.

Si Phan Don (Four Thousand Islands)
On foot and by boat, explore Si Phan Don in the area where the Mekong is the widest and probably the wildest. On Don Khone island, discover remnants of French rule and the Liphi Falls, the first main branch of the famous Mekong Falls. The Mekong Falls are considered the widest waterfall in the world and the largest waterfall in Asia. Return to Don Khong by boat.

Si Phan Don to Pakse
Before leaving the four thousand islands area, experience the Khong Phapheng Falls, the second main branch of the Mekong Falls. Over a width of more than 10 kilometers, the river cascades down over 21 meters. After that, head back to Pakse and visit the local market.
