  1. Day 1

    Stuart Highway to Coober Pedy

    You'll head south on the Stuart Highway through the outback, making a stop at Henbury Meteorite Craters Conservation Reserve to see the impact sites scattered across the landscape. After crossing into South Australia, you'll arrive in Coober Pedy and check into your underground hotel for the night, a unique accommodation carved right into the earth.

  2. Day 2

    Coober Pedy

    Spend the day exploring Coober Pedy, known as the opal capital since that's where most of Australia's opals come from. You'll head out to the Breakaways fracture for some good photo opportunities with its colorful rock formations, then check out the dingo fence. By afternoon you'll have free time to relax, shop for opals, or just wander around town.

  3. Day 3

    Lake Eyre - Marree

    You'll drive via a well-maintained track to William Creek, then board a small aircraft for aerial views of Lake Eyre, Australia's lowest point at 12 meters below sea level. From there you'll continue along the Oodnadatta Track, a historic route through remote country, arriving in Marree by evening.

  4. Day 4

    Flinders Range

    The drive to Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary is leisurely, and you'll see the 500km-long Flinders Range stretching across the horizon. Later you'll board a 4WD tour through Flinders Range National Park, hitting several lookouts including Sillers Lookout which has great views of the surrounding terrain.

    Flinders Range to Port Augusta

    After yesterday's rough 4WD ride, today you'll enjoy a more comfortable drive in the touring vehicle. You'll leave behind the ancient rock formations of Flinders Range, which are about 580 million years old, and head through Hawker toward Port Augusta on the south coast.

  6. Day 6

    Port Augusta to Coffin Bay to Port Lincoln

    Following breakfast, you'll take a scenic drive to Coffin Bay, known as the oyster capital of Australia. You'll tour one of the public oyster farms and get to try fresh oysters straight from the water. Then you'll head to Port Lincoln for the evening, arriving in time for dinner.

    Port Lincoln to Head of Bight

    Continuing westbound, you'll pass through Ceduna and arrive at the Head of Bight lookout within the Great Australian Bight Marine Park. The bluff offers great views, and if you're visiting during the right season, you might spot giant humpback whales. From there you'll enter the flat, treeless Nullarbor Plain.

    Head of Bight to Eucla

    You'll travel west along the south coast and cross into Western Australia at the border, where you'll adjust your watch and pass through the quarantine station. In Eucla, you'll check out the ruins of the Telegraph station from 1877 and stop for photos at Australia's longest stretch of road sign.

    Eucla to Esperance

    Driving west on the Eyre Highway through the remote Nullarbor Plain, you'll visit several highlights along the Great Ocean Drive including Rotary Lookout, Twilight Beach, and Pink Lake. You'll arrive in Esperance by evening, a town with a fantastic coastline and some nice beaches nearby.

    Lake Ballard

    You'll visit the Super Pit, Australia's largest open cut gold mine, to see the massive scale of the operation. Later you'll drive through the old mining town of Menzies on a dusty track to Lake Ballard, where 51 steel sculptures by Antony Gormley are spread across dry salt plains. Back in Kalgoorlie, you'll check out the historic Two-Up school.

    Coolgardie - Wave Rock - Hyden

    You'll start with a city sightseeing tour of Kalgoorlie, then visit the RFDS base that's been operating since 1937. After that you'll follow the historical gold seekers' route to Coolgardie, then head south on Emu Fence Road toward Hyden. Late afternoon you'll see Wave Rock, a natural formation that's worth the visit.

    Stirling Range - Albany

    You'll drive through farmland into the Stirling Range, a climatic island with unique plant varieties found nowhere else. Arriving in Albany in the afternoon, you'll get a city tour and head up Mt. Clarence for panoramic views overlooking King George Sound, where the first settlers landed in 1826. You'll also explore Natural Bridge and The Gap in Torndirrup National Park.

    William Bay - Pemberton

    You'll visit William Bay National Park to see Elephant Rocks and swim at Green Pool if the weather's nice. Then you'll head to the Valley of the Giants forest and walk the Tree Top Walk for bird's eye views through the canopy. For those up for it, there's a spiral ladder to climb at Gloucester Tree platform in Pemberton, surrounded by the tall Karri Forest.

    Cape Leeuwin - Margaret River - Perth

    You'll travel to Cape Leeuwin, Australia's southwestern point where the Indian and Southern Ocean meet. From there you'll explore the Margaret River wine region with a tasting at one of the local wineries. You'll see the dramatic Canal Rock formation, then visit Busselton's timber jetty, the longest in the southern hemisphere. Finally, you'll drive north past Bunbury and Mandurah, arriving in Perth to conclude the journey.
