You'll arrive in Panama City and get transferred to your hotel. The capital sits right on the Pacific Ocean with the Panama Canal close by. Once you're settled, you can walk around and see the contrast between the modern downtown area and the old colonial architecture in the historic quarter.

Panama City to El Valle de Antón
After picking up your rental car, you'll drive toward El Valle de Antón, which sits about 2,000 feet above sea level. On the way, stop at Altos de Campana National Park where there's a viewpoint looking out over the ocean and Punta Chame headland. Once you reach El Valle, you'll have options for hiking, bird watching, or checking out local spots around this small mountain village.

El Valle de Antón
The day is completely open in El Valle. Hike up to India Dormida summit if you want a workout, or try a night hike to see what comes out after dark. There's a crater tour with a butterfly farm, bike riding through the area, or just focused bird watching if that's your thing. You set the pace.

El Valle de Antón to Pedasi
Head back to the main highway and drive west toward the Azuero Peninsula. Stop in Chitrá to see the church of Nata de los Caballeros, built way back in 1520 and one of the oldest on this side of the world. You'll pass through little villages like Parita and La Villa de los Santos before reaching Pedasi, a quiet coastal town where whales show up between July and October if you're there at the right time.

Pedasi to Las Lajas/Boca Chica
Drive west on the Panamericana (that famous road that connects all the way from Alaska down to the tip of South America) through San Felix until you reach Las Lajas. Stay at either the German-run finca or head to a European-style boutique hotel in Boca Chica. This region is remote and natural, with several optional activities to choose from depending on what interests you.

Boquete

Boquete to Bocas del Toro
After breakfast, drive about 3 hours across the Cordillera de Talamanca mountains and down along the Caribbean coast where the scenery keeps changing. You'll reach Almirante, a port city built around the banana trade. Turn in your rental car and then board a boat out to Colón Island in Bocas del Toro. That's where your trip winds down, soaking in the relaxed Caribbean feel.
