    San José

    You'll land at San José airport where a driver meets you with a nameplate and takes you to the group hotel. Later that evening, meet your tour guide for an orientation covering local customs and practical information about what to expect. Dinner in town is optional if you want to explore on your own.

    Cartago

    After tropical breakfast, head to Irazú volcano's slopes at 3,000m/9,843ft where potatoes grow in the volcanic soil. Reach the 3,432m/11,260ft summit for views of both the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean on clear days, then walk through the lunar landscape to see the turquoise sulfur lagoon. Descend by e-bike over asphalt and gravel through small villages toward Turrialba volcano. The bike tour wraps up at La Pastora, then a bus takes you to Cartago where you'll have dinner together at a local restaurant.

    Orosí Valley

    Start with a typical Costa Rican breakfast, then bike through the scenic Orosí Valley. The route begins at the ancient temple of Ujárrás, one of Costa Rica's earliest temples, and features slightly rolling terrain with asphalt and gravel sections and light traffic. You'll see Tapantí National Park and Río Grande de Orosí while passing through coffee plantations and spotting birds. After crossing a suspension bridge, a bus transports you back to your hotel in Cartago. Lunch is on your own.

You'll start on paved roads then transition to unpaved gravel paths through rural areas past pineapple and palm plantations, where monkeys, iguanas, insects, butterflies, and birds might appear. In the evening, take a special night hike through the tropical rainforest where frogs, snakes, bats, and other jungle creatures are particularly active. Heavy rain cancels the night hike for safety.

    Arenal National Park

After this rejuvenating break, the bus drives you to the beach. Lunch together is at a typical local restaurant.

    I saw the highlights of northern Chile and Patagonia in a short space of time. I knew there would be a lot of walking and driving, but it made me very tired to change places almost every day by plane or bus.
