Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Gorenjska Region

Pick up your rental car at the confirmed location, whether that's the airport or your hotel. From there, you'll drive toward the northwest corner of Slovenia, heading into the Alpine region where the landscape shifts dramatically with high mountains. Mt. Triglav dominates the scenery here, and you're moving into terrain that borders both Italy and Austria. It's a good day for getting oriented with your vehicle and settling into the drive.

    Start point

  2. Day 2

    Lake Bohinj

This morning starts at Lake Bled, where you can walk around the island church and hike up to the clifftop castle for views across the water. The lake sits in a valley surrounded by mountains, and it's a popular spot partly because of the famous Bled Cream cakes you should definitely try while you're there. After lunch or later in the afternoon, head to Lake Bohinj, Slovenia's largest natural lake. You'll have options here: take a boat ride, go horseback riding along the shore, or just walk the lakeside path if you prefer something quieter.

  3. Day 3

Vršič Pass - Soča Valley - Bovec

Head north to Kranjska Gora, an alpine town positioned near the Austrian and Italian borders. The main event today is crossing Mountain Pass Vrsic at 1,611 meters, the highest road pass in the Eastern Julian Alps. The drive includes 50 serpentine curves, so it's definitely an experience and takes time to navigate safely. Once you descend on the other side, you'll enter the Soca valley where the river runs an emerald green color. You'll end the day in Bovec, a small town in this valley region.

Spend your time in the Soca valley exploring what interests you most. Water sports enthusiasts can try rafting, kayaking, or canyoning in the river. If you prefer land activities, there are hiking trails and cycling routes with panoramic views of the mountains and valley. For people seeking something more intense, zipline parks and skydiving are available in the area. History lovers should look into the WWI sites from the Isonzo front, which have connections to Ernest Hemingway's writing. You can do as much or as little as you'd like and still have time to rest in Bovec.

This morning, stop in Kobarid to visit the WWI museum before continuing toward the karst region. The area is known for its thousands of caves and also for air-dried ham production, which pairs well with local Teran red wine if you want to sample regional specialties. Along the way, visit Lipica stud farm to see the Lipizzaner horses, a breed that's born black and gradually turns white as the horses mature. By evening, you'll arrive at the Slovenian coast on the Istrian peninsula for a two-night stay in the area.

Explore either Piran or Koper, both charming old towns with Venetian architecture left over from centuries of influence. Visit the active salt pans in Strunjan or Secovlje if you're curious about salt production. For evening activities, you can try the local casinos, eat at waterfront restaurants with fresh seafood, or take a walk through the medieval streets.
