You'll arrive in Engelberg and get settled into your accommodation. It's worth spending an extra day or two here to let your body adjust before tackling the high altitude mountain walks. This gives you time to explore the village, get your bearings, and prepare for the trails ahead.

- Day 2
Engelberg to Engstlenalp
This is a demanding walking day, so you'll need to be ready for it. The route takes you past Trubsee Lake and up to Jochpass before you descend to Engstlenalp. If the full ascent feels too much, you can use cable cars to cut back on elevation gain. Along the way you'll see wild flowers and if you're lucky, spot marmots. The lake itself is worth pausing to take in the views.

Engstlenalp to Meiringen
Today you'll walk past Tannensee Lake and head up to a ridge walk over Balmeregghorn, which gives you some really nice views of the snow-covered Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau peaks. This is one of Switzerland's best walks for scenery. Once you reach Planplatten, you can take a cable car down into Meiringen, a charming town that sits on the River Aare.

Meiringen
You get a break from walking today. Meiringen has several options if you want to stay active or take it easy. Ballenberg is Switzerland's main open-air museum and worth a few hours. There's also a steam railway to Rothorn, the Aareschlucht gorge to explore, or you could take a cruise on Lake Brienz. Pick what appeals to you.

Meiringen to Schwarzwaldalp
This is a shorter but energetic day with chances to add detours if you want. You'll leave Meiringen, cross the River Aare, and head up toward Reichenbach Falls, which you might recognize from Sherlock Holmes stories. After that, the route goes through the Rosenlaui valley before you reach Schwarzwaldalp.

Schwarzwaldalp to Grindelwald
You have two route choices today. The high-level scenic walk takes you to the First cable car station with great Berner Oberland views. Alternatively, there's a more relaxed option with a steady climb to Grosse Scheidegg pass and then down into Grindelwald village. Both routes give you nice mountain views throughout the day.

Grindelwald
Several options open up for today's walk. You can take the Via Alpina over Kleine Scheidegg pass, try the challenging Eiger Trail that runs along the North Face, or combine different routes. Mountain railways let you adjust your starting and ending points. The Kleine Scheidegg route is the longest stretch of the whole trip and has the best mountain views.
