Itinerary
- Day 1
Alice Springs to West MacDonnell Ranges
Start early from Alice Springs and head into the West MacDonnell Ranges for your first wilderness walk. You'll cover 14km on a casual route with nice views at Euro Ridge, then ground support picks you up at Wallaby Gap for transfer to camp. There's a chance to cool off at a natural waterhole on the way if you fancy it. Once you settle in at the remote campsite, you'll try an Aboriginal bush food tasting platter to kick things off.

- Day 2
West MacDonnell Ranges
This day pushes you harder with a 13.4km section of the Larapinta Trail reserved for experienced walkers in solid fitness. You'll see high quartzite ridgelines including Haasts Bluff and Mt Zeil, which is the Northern Territory's highest peak. The views are really something special from up there. After hours of hiking, if there's time and you've got energy left, a swim at a natural waterhole gives you a chance to refresh before heading back.

Ormiston Gorge
You'll work through the lower areas around Ormiston Gorge and gradually climb into the Finke River's back reaches. This region holds important Aboriginal cultural sites like 'Yapulpa' from the Carpet Snake Dreaming and locations connected to Emu and Kangaroo Man Dreaming stories. A refreshing swim fits in if timing works out. Back at camp, you'll spend the evening relaxing under the desert night sky with clear sightlines to stars you don't see anywhere else.

- Day 4
Mount Sonder
You'll need to wake around 3am to start the challenging 8km climb to Mount Sonder's peak. Reaching the top rewards you with a sunrise view that spans 360 degrees across the landscape from the highest point around. After you come down from that, a cooked Aussie breakfast waits at camp. Your afternoon is yours to spend however you like at camp or exploring Ormiston Gorge. That evening you'll have one more night under the Milky Way at the remote campsite.

- Day 5
Ormiston Gorge to Alice Springs
Your last day features the Ormiston Pound Walk, which ranks as one of the best short walks on the Larapinta Trail. You'll see wildlife and varied vegetation throughout, with views of Chewing's Range and Mount Giles as you enter the Gorge. After lunch by the waterhole at Ormiston Gorge, you'll pack up camp and head back toward town. Hot showers feel particularly good after days in the bush, and then you'll make your way to an outback restaurant in Alice Springs for your farewell dinner.
