Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arrival in Kathmandu

    You'll arrive at Kathmandu airport where a team representative meets you for a private tourist bus transfer to your hotel. After settling in, your guide gives you a trek briefing in the evening so you're ready to start the journey.

  2. Day 2

    Kathmandu to Tumlingtar

    Following breakfast, you'll take a short domestic flight to Tumlingtar. Once there, you'll meet your crew and walk to the campsite. Spend the rest of the day getting settled and checking out the nearby areas before the trek officially begins.

  3. Day 3

    Tumlingtar to Mane-Bhanjyang

    Your first trekking day starts from Tumlingtar through farm fields and small villages. The path gradually climbs through tropical Sal forests as you make your way to Khadbari, where you'll see Mt. Chamlang. From there you ascend and descend to reach Mane-Bhanjyang for the night.

  4. Day 4

    Mane-Bhanjyang to Chichila

    You'll trek through bamboo forests alongside the Arun Koshi River, passing the Gurung village of Sekaha. After lunch at Bhotebas, the route continues through forest and farmland to bring you to Chichila village by evening.

  5. Day 5

    Chichila to Num

    This day takes you through dense forest with rhododendron, hemlocks, and oak trees as you climb toward Mure ridge. After ascending, you'll descend for about two hours to reach Num, a small village with Rai and Sherpa settlements.

  6. Day 6

    Num to Seduwa

    You'll descend steep terraced slopes through oak forest, then cross a suspension bridge over the Arun River. The path gets dense and slippery at times, but you'll navigate through and climb to Seduwa, which marks the entry point for Makalu Barun National Park.

  7. Day 7

    Seduwa to Tashi Gaun

    This is a shorter, easier trekking day. You'll walk through meadows, streams, and paddy fields, passing small villages. The route ascends gradually through rice and millet fields, finishing at Tashi Gaun, the last permanent village in the valley.

  8. Day 8

    Tashi Gaun to Kauma La Danda

    The trek goes through beautiful oak and rhododendron forests, then opens to pastures with shepherd huts scattered around. Later, the trail gets steep with thick rhododendron forest as you climb to Kauma La Danda ridge, where you'll have significant mountain views.

  9. Day 9

    Kauma La Danda to Mumbuk

    You'll face multiple ascents and descents today. After climbing to Keke La Pass at 4127 meters, you'll continue to Kalo Pokhari and Shipton La at 4170 meters. Then comes a descent through hemlock, birch, pine and rhododendron woods to Mumbuk.

  10. Day 10

    Mumbuk to Nehe Kharka

    You'll descend into a narrow valley and cross the Barun Khola, where the path becomes slippery with rocks scattered throughout. Walk carefully since rock falls happen frequently here. Later you trek along the north bank of Barun Khola to Yangri Kharka and then to Nehe Kharka.

  11. Day 11

    Nehe Kharka to Sherson

    After crossing a wooden bridge over the Barun River, you'll walk on rocks for several hours as vegetation gradually disappears. The landscape changes to barberries, juniper and rhododendron bushes. By evening you'll reach Sherson, where you can see the lower Barun Glacier and Mt. Makalu.

    Sherson to Makalu Base Camp

    You'll ascend to Makalu Base Camp and cross rocky ridges on the west side of the camp. From here you get views of Mt. Makalu, Peak 3, Baruntse and Peak 5 in their full glory.

  13. Day 13

    Makalu Base Camp (Rest Day)

    This is your rest day at base camp. You can explore nearby areas and hike on the right side of camp to see Barun Pokhari with closer Mt. Makalu views. On a clear day you might see rare glimpses of Mt. Everest and Mt. Lhotse. After ascending to an open meadow for additional mountain views, you'll head back to Sherson for the night.

    Sherson to Yangri Kharka

    After a warm breakfast, you'll start the return trek passing through rhododendron forest to reach the Barun River. There's a steep, difficult section briefly, then the trail eases up as you trek to Yangri Kharka at the end of Barun Valley.

  15. Day 15

    Yangri Kharka to Mumbuk

    You'll trek back toward Mumbuk from Yangri Kharka, spending 5 to 6 hours walking rocky paths through dense forest. The camp sits in the middle of alpine forest with lush green vegetation and mountain views surrounding the area.

  16. Day 16

    Mumbuk to Kauma Danda

    Retracing your route, you'll head back following the same path. You'll reach Kauma Danda by going through Kalo Pokhari and Shipton La, then pass through Keke La. The descent continues along the Barun River to bring you to Kauma Danda.

  17. Day 17

    Kauma Danda to Narbugaon

    From Kauma Danda, you'll trek back to Tashi Gaun and then continue toward Narbugaon on the upper trail. The route passes through chill dam forest and reaches farm terraces before arriving at Narbugaon, a larger Sherpa village.

  18. Day 18

    Narbugaon to Num

  19. Day 19

    Num to Chichila

    Heading to Chichila, you'll climb uphill to the top of the ridge, then descend all the way down to the village. Once there, you can explore nearby Gurung villages and observe local daily activities.

  20. Day 20

    Chichila to Khadbari

    The trek becomes easier now. You'll walk gradually back to Khadbari through farmland, dense forest and small villages. Once at the large village of Khadbari, you can explore nearby markets and get a feel for the local lifestyle.

    Khadbari to Tumlingtar

    • Here is an indication for which countries you might need a visa. Please contact the local embassy for help applying for visas to these places.
  • Payment information
    • For any tour departing before January 13th, 2026 a full payment is necessary. For tours departing after January 13th, 2026, a minimum payment of 20% is required to confirm your booking with Nepal Social Treks. The final payment will be automatically charged to your credit card on the designated due date. The final payment of the remaining balance is required at least 30 days prior to the departure date of your tour. TourRadar never charges you a booking fee and will charge you in the stated currency.
