From there, you head uphill through Dhampus village and continue gradually toward Pothana, then on to Deurali at 2200m/7218 feet. It's an easy first day on the trail, roughly 3 to 4 hours of walking total, and you'll end up at a tea house lodge where you can rest and adjust.

This day takes you off the main Annapurna route into more remote territory. You'll trek through thick forest with oak, maple, hemlock, and rhododendron as you head toward Forest Camp at Kokar, where you'll stop for lunch. After eating, the trail keeps climbing and the vegetation shifts around you as you work your way up to Low Camp at 2900m/9514 feet. Plan for about 7 hours of walking, so it's a fuller day on your feet.

    Low Camp to High Camp

Early on, you'll climb through rhododendron forest heading toward Middle Camp, then push on to Badal Danda where the views really open up and you'll break out above the tree line. From there, the trail follows the Mardi Himal ridge across grass with occasional rhododendron bushes scattered about until you reach High Camp at 3585m/11761 feet. Expect 5 to 6 hours of trekking as you gain elevation and get closer to your objective.

The trail crosses grass with a couple of steeper pitches along the way, and you might spot dzokpo (yak and cow crossbreds) or Danphe pheasants. From Base Camp, the views stretch into the Annapurna Sanctuary showing you Annapurna's south face and the other sanctuary peaks. After taking in the scenery, you'll head back down to High Camp for lunch, then continue down to either Middle Camp or Low Camp depending on your pace.

This 6 hour descent takes you through traditional Nepalese villages and farmland. You'll likely stay in a homestay in Siding connected to the Low Camp lodge, which gives you real insight into local life, and you'll eat dhal baht with the family right in their kitchen.
