1. Day 1

    Gosau

You'll arrive in Gosau Valley and get settled into your accommodation. This region is part of the Northern Alps and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 1997. The valley has two lakes, and you'll receive all your travel documents and information for the coming days here.

Start the day taking the Gosaukammbahn cable car up to 1,475 meters at Zwieselalm. From there you'll hike the Bible Trail, named for Bible prints that were smuggled through here during the Counter-Reformation. The route crosses alpine pastures with views on all sides, circles around the Bischofsmütze peak, and ends at Hofpürgl Hut on a scenic terrace. Plan for about 4 hours 30 minutes of hiking over roughly 10 km with noticeable elevation changes.

You'll hike the Salzburger Almenweg Alpine Trail through unusual limestone rock formations. The route passes through the Rinderfeld with its distinctive limestone blocks and clear streams. You'll climb to the Tor, the highest point where Salzburg and Styria meet, then walk beneath steep cliff faces of Torstein, Mitterspitz, and Hoher Dachstein on your way to Dachstein Südwand Hut. The day finishes with a descent into Ramsau, a mountaineering village on a plateau. Expect about 6 hours of hiking covering around 12.5 km with significant elevation changes.

You have two route choices: a direct hike from your hotel through sparse forest and alpine meadows (4 to 5 hours), or take the Dachstein cable car and hike across the glacier with broader views (also 4 to 5 hours). Either way you'll see impressive vistas across Ramsau, the Enns Valley, and the Niedere and Hohe Tauern mountains.

The early part of the route has barren, rocky terrain, then later descends back through meadows and forests. You'll take a break at Grafenbergalm to rest and take in the views. The day ends at a collection of huts and an inn at the base of Stoderzinken, a beautiful panoramic mountain in northern Styria. This is about 6 hours of hiking covering roughly 13 km.

From Hochmühleck with its views of the remote Kemet Mountains, you'll continue through forest near Steinitzenalm mountain hut, then descend to Bad Mitterndorf. Later you'll stop at Koppental Mountain Hut, walk through an old railway tunnel, and visit the Koppenbillerhohle water cave. Das Wetter war gut, Schneelage hervorragend und die Touren mit den Schneeschuhen genau passend. Die Gruppe war insgesamt passend, die Schwächeren klinkten sich ohnedies aus.
