North Cascades: Desolation Peak Day Hike
You'll stay at Lightning Creek for two nights, but this day is dedicated to tackling Desolation Peak as a day hike. Leaving your heavier gear behind, you're looking at 13.6 miles total with 4,400 feet of elevation gain. After a 2-mile warm-up along the lake, the real climbing starts and continues until you reach the 6,102-foot summit where a historic fire lookout stands. Jack Kerouac actually spent 63 days here in 1956. The 360-degree views from the top make the effort feel worth it.

The blue-green waters sit beneath the dramatic granite peak of Hozomeen Mountain. Your last backcountry dinner and a good night's sleep set you up for the final day.
