- Day 1
St. Gilgen
You'll arrive at Lake Wolfgang and get settled into your accommodation in St. Gilgen. The town has closed-to-traffic streets lined with traditional villas and historic sites worth wandering through. There's the Mozart Birthplace Museum here, which focuses on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's mother and sister rather than the composer himself. Before heading to dinner, you'll pick up your travel documents at the hotel, so you're all set for the days ahead.

St. Wolfgang
Start the morning with a boat trip out to the pilgrimage site of St. Wolfgang, a journey connecting these lakeside towns since 1873. From there, you'll hike up to Calvary Hill and continue on the Schafbergweg trail, passing by the Aschinger snack bar on your way to Schafbergalm. This is the midpoint of Austria's steepest cog railway, and after exploring, you'll return to St. Gilgen via the Schafbergsteig trail. Stop at the European Monastery of Gut Aich to check out its herb garden and try their special liqueur from the monastery's own winery before taking the romantic riverside path back.

You'll cross the 1,030-meter Almkogel peak, which sits on the border between Salzburg and Upper Austria. The views from up there take in the Attersee, Mondsee, and Irrsee lakes spread out below. After descending through quiet forests, you'll pass by the Thekla Chapel and the Drachenwand Inn, then walk through the picturesque village of St. Lorenz. From there, follow the shore path to Mondsee, and you'll see the castle and basilica coming into view as you approach the town.

This day follows the shores of Lake Mondsee with the Drachenwand and Schober mountain range visible across the water. You'll gradually climb up to Forsthaus Wartenfels for refreshments and a break. If you're interested, there's an optional detour to the Wartenfels ruins at 1,020 meters, which really do offer some of the best views of Lake Wolfgangsee and Lake Fuschl from that vantage point. Then you'll head down to Lake Fuschl, which stays mostly undeveloped and is surrounded by forest and meadow. There's an optional 10 km loop around the lake if you want to explore more, and later you'll catch the bus back to St. Gilgen.
