Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Nairobi to Mt Kenya

Your driver picks you up around 8:00 am from your Nairobi accommodation and heads toward Mt Kenya through Kikuyu countryside, passing near the equator along the way. You'll stop for lunch in Nanyuki Town, then continue on to Sirimon Park Gate where the actual trekking begins. From there, you'll hike through bamboo, rosewood, and heather forests heading to Old Moses Camp. Wildlife is common on this section, so keep an eye out for buffaloes, elephants, and bushbucks as you move through the forest.

  2. Day 2

    Mt Kenya Trek

After eating breakfast early, you're hiking along Mackinders Valley toward Shipton Camp, which sits at the base of Mt Kenya's high peaks. The trail crosses through hills and valleys as you move through moorlands, and you'll spot giant groundsels and lobelias scattered across the landscape. Mountain rock hyrax are common here too. The views of the main peaks get better as you gain elevation, and the scenery really opens up once you get above the tree line.

  3. Day 3

    Mt Kenya Summit

This is summit day, so you're starting at 3:00 am and climbing steep scree slopes and rugged rocks to reach Point Lenana, the hiker's summit at 4,985m/16,355 feet. The early start means you'll be on top to catch the sunrise, and if the weather cooperates, you might see Mt Kilimanjaro about 340 km to the south. After spending time at the summit, you hike back down to Shipton Camp for brunch, then continue descending to Old Moses Camp where you'll spend the night.

  4. Day 4

    Mt Kenya to Nairobi

You'll have breakfast before beginning the final descent, this time moving gradually through the rainforest toward Sirimon Park Gate. Once you reach the gate, your driver meets you to head back through Nanyuki and make the drive back to Nairobi. You'll be dropped off at your accommodation by late afternoon, finishing up your Mt Kenya trek.

We came on this trip hoping to arrive in time to see the wildebeest migration in Masai Mara and unfortunately didn't coincide exactly because its not a guarantee that the wildebeest will be migrating the same week every year, but we saw SO MUCH WILDLIFE that we couldn't believe our eyes! We were really happy with the camping, food, safari drives, guides, drivers, everything. Special thanks to our guide Samson in Kenya he made it such an authentic and fun trip.

    Asked on March 31st, 2025

Is it suitable for a 75 year old to do this trek? If he cannot make it to the summit, can he stay in Shipton Camp and wait for the group?

    • Bamba TravelOperatorWritten April 2025

If you are a mountain climber or trekker and fit you can make it with the up Sirimon down Sirimon route, if not, yes you can stay and Shipton and try to acclimatize or come down to Oldmoses, normally for Mt. Kenya we don't join them in a group in case the speed is slow, they go at their own pace. If you can't summit, the guide brings you down.

    • Bamba TravelOperatorWritten April 2025

The price for this option would be 2,825 USD per person.
