- NENahman· September 8th, 2024Overall the tour was great. A few improvements to consider. 1. In Sheki, to add a 4x4 tour in caucus maintain, there is enough time for it. 2. The hotel in Baku can be closer to the old town.Show moreTrip date: August 2024
- MSMARGARET· May 25th, 2024I would recommend Azerbaijan, a very interesting country. breathtaking modern architecture (although some at the expense of previous buildings), wonderful deserted countryside. So much space and so clean. It seems that most people live in the towns and villages. We were in Baku of about 5 million, Sheki 200,000 people. The coastline is barren and arid, inland lush and green (when we went in May, after a lot of very heavy and abnormal rain). The tour guide was a young local man called Farhad, very proper and correct. Good safe driver. Nicely spoken English. He concentrated on the history of his country, both ancient and recent. We realised afterwards that he didn't cover much of how it is now, which would have been interesting. The tour was called 'relaxing', which it was, no hurry, start the day at 10am which was perfect ;-) But some of our visits were too short: On the first proper day the trip around 'old town' Baku should have been longer, we could have explored more streets and visited more buildings. The visit to the Haydar Aliyev Museum was definately too short, Farhad wanted to give us only 1 hour, we agreed on 1.5 and that was not enough. The boat ride was unnecesary - a paddle boat routed around an artificial boating lake (Little Venice). On the second proper day the drive to the mud volcanoes was an unforgetably wonderful experience (bone shaking drive in old Lada cars). When we went inland to Sheki for several days there was and had been heavy rain, which prohibited us visiting various buildings, waterfalls, villages and sites of interest (Mamirli Waterfall, Sumuq Fortress, Lahic village) because the roads had been washed away. Unfortunately there was not enough planned to substitute these failed visits. We suggested the local market (to see the local culture and produce) but this wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. The hotels were excellent, in Baku the 'Grand Hotel' a lovely classic hotel with very spacious bedrooms, and a lovely dining room alongside the gardens. Friendly and helpful staff. In Sheki a very well decorated hotel called 'Old Town', very pretty. Smaller but attractive bedrooms, and a peacock in the courtyard. A pity about the rain. The food was all good, all natural and tasty food, Farhad took us to a range of restaurants, and we tried all sorts of local cuisine. Costs in Azerbaijan are lower than in Europe, in May 2024 1 manat = 0.54 euros, so very approx 10 manat was 5€. A bottle of wine 25 - 30 manat in the restaurants. A 2 course meal about 15 - 25 manat pp, fast food about 10 manat pp. A taxi ride with 'Bolt' just 3 manat across Baku - which is due to rise in July when they change car fleet from toyota prius. Musuems (extra visits) seemed to be 10 or 15 manat pp. We went as a couple, thinking that we would join up with other people, but there was no-one else, we had a car and driver just for us!Show moreAzerbaijan Guide commented on this reviewHi. it is verified reviewTrip date: May 2024

Asked on August 24th, 2024Can you send me the names of hotels on this tour? I prefer centrally located hotels. I ask because one of the reviews said that the hotels are about 5 km from the center (e.g. the old town or the promenade in Baku).

We provide Auroom Hotel in Baku which is max 3 km far from downtown. Old Town Hotel in Sheki which is at main street of Sheki. At Old Town we can recommend Shah Palace Hotel as well which will increase for about 50 USD per night in Baku.
