By midday you reach Lava Tower at 4,640m/15,223ft, the high point for lunch with excellent views all around. After eating, the afternoon brings a steep descent to Barranco Camp at 3,960m/12,992ft, which sits in the Great Barranco Valley and is sheltered by tall cliffs with plains stretching out below.

Start by descending into the Great Barranco ravine, then you'll tackle the Great Barranco Wall, a long and tiring rock climb that's non-technical but physically demanding. From there you head toward the Karanga valley, passing under the Heim and Kersten glaciers. After climbing steeply from Karanga valley, you'll reach Karanga Camp at 3,963m/13,001ft. If you're feeling strong, many trekkers do an acclimatization hike to around 4,200m in the mid-afternoon before returning to rest.

The steep climb is challenging, and the altitude makes it tougher. Once you arrive, you'll eat, rest, and prepare mentally for what's ahead. Stay hydrated and warm, then have an early dinner. You'll try to sleep before being woken around 11pm or midnight for the summit push.
