You'll arrive in Belem and check into your hotel. Your tour leader meets you at 5pm for a welcome briefing to go over the week ahead. Dinner with the group is optional this evening, so if you're feeling energized after traveling, you could head out on your own or visit the Museu Goeldi if you arrived with time to spare.

Belem
A local guide takes you through Belem's main sights, walking past Portuguese-tiled houses and baroque churches. You'll spend time at the Ver-o-Peso market, which has meat, fish, medicinal plants, crafts, and acai berries all in one bustling spot. The opera house is on the agenda too (though entry costs extra). After lunch, the afternoon is yours to wander around at your own pace. By evening, head to Estacao das Docas where old dockside warehouses have been converted into restaurants, bars, and a small theatre.

Belem to Marajo Island
Early this morning you'll drive to the ferry port and board a public ferry heading to Marajo Island, sitting in the Amazon River Delta. The crossing takes about 2.5 to 3 hours and you can move around on deck freely to take in the scenery. Once there, you'll drive to your pousada perched on a cliff overlooking Joanes Beach. In the afternoon, consider taking a canoe trip on the Rio Limao or walking along the quiet beaches.

Marajo Island
This morning starts at Fazenda Sao Jeronimo where you'll see the coconut farming operation, take forest walks, paddle up the river by canoe, and cross a wooden walkway through mangroves. Lunch happens at Mironga Farm followed by a tasting of their products like butter, cheese, and buffalo meat. If time allows, you can visit a small pottery centre to see early ceramic work and then take a walk along a mangrove beach before heading back.

- Day 5
Marajo Island to Santarem
You'll head back to Belem early this morning on a smaller boat, arriving at the hidrovi rio in the city centre in just under 2 hours. After grabbing lunch, you'll board your second boat bound for Santarem. It's a public passenger boat with basic conditions but you'll have simple twin cabins with air conditioning, a shower, and a toilet. Meals on board are buffet-style and included.

En route to Santarem
The boat travels through narrow waterways bordered by rainforest and wooden dwellings built on stilts. You'll see typical river activity where locals wash clothes, fish, and move around by canoe. Once or twice during the day you'll stop at busy ports in the Amazon Basin to watch colorful cargo loading and unloading, though you won't get off to explore those stops.

En route to Santarem
This morning you wake up on the main Amazon River with both banks visible at a distance. The real highlight of this day is the night sky since you're far from city lights, making for excellent stargazing opportunities. This is slow travel so bring a book or something to keep yourself occupied on the boat.

Santarem to Alter do Chao
You'll leave the boat and drive 35 kilometres south to Alter do Chao, a relaxed town known for white-sand beaches and clear waters on a blue lagoon bordered by forest reserves. The afternoon is free so you can explore, swim, and unwind. Options include taking a water taxi to open-air restaurants on Ilha do Amor or checking out Lagoa Verde. Depending on the season, you might explore the Enchanted Forest by canoe or walk forest canals and catch sunset at Ponta de Cururu beach where pink dolphins show up fairly often.

- Day 9
FLONA Nature Reserve
You'll spend the full day at FLONA, a massive protected primary rainforest reserve. A boat takes you along the Tapajos River to the Jamaraqua Community Centre for coffee before starting a 12-kilometre jungle walk lasting roughly 5 hours with stops for photos and nature information. The trail is mostly flat except for one significant 300m climb with rope assistance. You'll learn about medicinal plants and forest life, swim if there's time, and eat lunch prepared by the community. The boat returns you to Alter do Chao around 7pm.

Alter do Chao to Manaus
You have the morning free along the river in Alter do Chao. In the afternoon, you'll transfer to Santarem airport and fly to Manaus (roughly 10 minutes accounting for the time zone change). From there, head to the port to board your private boat for a 3-night cruise down the Rio Negro sleeping in hammocks. The boat has a galley, small bar, and basic washing facilities with hammocks on deck, so privacy is minimal. Your tour leader can show you how to hang a hammock diagonally for better sleep.

- Day 11
Rio Negro Cruise
Today brings a range of Rio Negro excursions including spotting huge Victoria Regia water lilies and doing birdwatching, with decent chances of seeing pink Amazon River dolphins. You'll use motorized canoes to explore riverbanks and trek through the jungle on foot. There's a visit to a caboclo family and an indigenous community where you'll learn about rainforest living and how they use plants and trees. You'll explore jungle trails and see the Anavilhanas archipelago with its 1,000 plus islands full of aquatic life like caimans and dolphins. Evening includes night outings to spot dark caiman or a piranha supper.

Your final full day on the boat wraps up your Amazon exploration. You'll continue discovering the Rio Negro region while separating fact from myth about the Amazon and gaining deeper appreciation for the ecosystem.

Manaus
You'll arrive in Manaus this afternoon and have the rest of the day to explore. The main highlight is Teatro Amazonas, a stunning 19th-century opera house built in pastel pink by wealthy rubber barons who wanted to recreate European grandeur in the jungle. The contrast between its lavish interior and the city's industrial feel is striking. Around 4pm the central square fills with bars and restaurants opening for the evening, and it's a great spot to try grilled tambaqui (a large freshwater fish) and check out the nightlife.

Manaus
After breakfast at your hotel in Manaus, your trip ends and you're free to leave whenever you'd like. If your flight leaves later in the day, the hotel can store your luggage so you have more time to explore Manaus.
