Itinerary
- Day 1
Munich to Oberammergau
You'll arrive at Munich Airport and head straight to Oberammergau by car. The 90-minute drive takes you through rolling Bavarian countryside, and you'll settle into your hotel in this charming town that serves as your base for the week.

Ammer Valley
Start with a 15-minute ride on the little red train to Bad Kohlgrub. From there you'll walk through the Ammer Valley, passing through farming villages like Unterammergau with its beautiful Rococo church. The route continues to Pulvermoos wildlife sanctuary where you might spot some of the 60 bird species living there. You can choose between a shorter 2.5-hour walk covering 9km or a longer 4-hour option that covers 16km.

Laber - Ettal
A cable car takes you to the top of Laber mountain at 1685m, giving you views across to Zugspitze and the Austrian Alps. You'll then walk down through cool pine forests toward Ettal village and have lunch there. After eating, head to the 14th Century Benedictine monastery to see its Baroque architecture. Later you'll walk back through the valley past Barenhohle cave. Pick from a 3.5-hour walk covering 12km or a longer 4.5-hour option at 14km.

Staffelsee
You'll walk along the shore of Staffelsee, one of Bavaria's larger lakes with clear blue water. There's a good chance to swim if you want to. Stop in Uffing village for lunch with lake views and mountains behind. Later in the afternoon, you can either take a lake cruiser to see hidden coves and the 7 islands (you'll pay for this locally), or walk back on the quieter side of the lake. Three walking options available: 3.5 hours/12km, 5 hours/18km, or 6 hours/22km.

Oberammergau
This is your rest day from walking, so you get to choose what sounds good. Take the bus to Neuschwanstein Castle if you want the fairy-tale experience on its rocky perch. Or go up the funicular to the top of Zugspitze for a 360-degree view of peaks in Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Germany. Alternatively, stay local and relax at Wellenberg outdoor pool where there's sauna, Jacuzzi and spa facilities.

Sonnenberg
The Kolben chairlift takes you up to 1270m. From there you'll head up to the Sonnenberg ridge and then descend past several waterfalls and the reconstructed 19th Century Schleifmuhle whetstone mill. The route finishes through meadows back to your starting point. You can do this walk in 4 hours covering 13km or take the longer 6-hour option at 17km.

Linderhof
You'll walk to Schloss Linderhof, Mad King Ludwig's over-the-top Rococo palace from 1878 that was inspired by Versailles. Spend time looking at the French and Italianate terraced gardens and the golden fountain that shoots up 30 meters every hour. Head back along a quiet path through Linder Valley and the village of Graswang, which has preserved old farmhouses and a 17th Century church with frescoes. Two options: 1.5 hours/6km or 3.5 hours/13km.
