8 Days in Sweden, incl. Saint Anna Archipelago and Häradskar Island
Saint Anna's archipelago reveals its diversity over eight days, from mainland forests to outer skerries. The route includes 6 major stops including historic Harstena village, Kupa Klint lookout, and Häradskär lighthouse, featuring wild camping on private islands.
- Day 1
Arrival in Norrkoping
Getting to Norrkoping is simple. Take a 2-hour train from Stockholm Arlanda or a 55-minute bus from Stockholm Skavsta airport. Meet your outfitter at 10 AM for an hour-long drive through beautiful Swedish countryside to the Saint Anna launch point. You'll get safety briefings and learn navigation basics before packing your kayak. A previous paddler notes: "Thomas makes packing look easy, but you'll never do it as quick or perfectly in reality!"
- Days 2-3
Aspoja and Outer Islands
Paddle northeast through quiet bays to Aspoja. You'll pass through Uggelholmarna Nature Reserve where 300-year-old pines tower above. Watch for white-tailed eagles nesting in the area as you head to the outer archipelago. A recent visitor shared: "Even during peak summer season, we could always find our own private island to camp on, with incredible sunset views."
- Days 4-5
Harstena Village & Häsko
Visit historic Harstena village with its well-preserved buildings and waterfront restaurants. Stop by the old schoolhouse museum to learn about local life. Next up is Häsko where you can try a traditional wood-fired sauna. If you want to use the hot tub make sure to call ahead. It needs several hours to heat up.
- Days 6-7
Outer Archipelago Adventure
Make your way to Häradskar lighthouse at the archipelago's edge. This section needs good weather so check your daily weather updates on the emergency phone. Find a spot to wild camp on the rocky islands where according to one visitor "the only sounds are bird calls and waves crashing against the rocks."
- Day 8
Return Journey
- Day 1
Stockholm
Start your Swedish adventure in Stockholm. Take the quick 20-minute Arlanda Express train from the airport to avoid city traffic. Visit Gamla Stan (Old Town) in the afternoon once the morning crowds thin out. The medieval streets feel most magical around sunset when long shadows stretch across the cobblestones.
- Day 2
Stockholm to Linköping
Visit the Vasa Museum right at opening (10 AM) to see the remarkable 17th-century warship before it gets busy. Drive an hour south to Trosa for lunch in this riverside gem. The Sörmland archipelago offers a more local feel than Stockholm's waterways. It's another 2 hours to Linköping where you'll spend the night.
- Day 3
Linköping to Karlskrona
- Day 4
Karlskrona to Malmö
- Day 5
Malmö to Gothenburg
Drive northwest along the Kattegat coast. Take a break at Tylösand Beach near Halmstad. Plan to reach Gothenburg by late afternoon to explore the Haga area's wooden houses and cafes. "The historic Haga district feels like stepping back in time - the cinnamon buns at Café Husaren are literally the size of your face!"
- Day 6
Gothenburg to Örebro
- Day 7
Örebro to Stockholm
- Day 8
Stockholm Departure
9 Days in Scandinavia, incl. Copenhagen and Stockholm
Swedish urban life unfolds across Gothenburg's canals, Donso Island's beaches, and Stockholm's Gamla Stan over 9 days. Highlights include visits to Sundbergs Konditori café, walks through Sodermalm district, and craft beer pub crawls in Gothenburg. Multi-share accommodation and breakfast included.
- Days 1-2
Copenhagen, Denmark
The metro ride from the airport to downtown takes just 15 minutes. Stay near Nyhavn to be close to main attractions. Visit Nyhavn before 9 AM to get photos of the colorful houses without crowds. If you're planning to see multiple sites, the Copenhagen Card will help you save money. Looking for affordable food? Try Reffen street food market instead of regular restaurants.
- Days 3-4
Gothenburg, Sweden
The train ride from Copenhagen takes about 3.5 hours. The central station location makes it simple to walk to most hostels. Take the 11 AM ferry from Saltholmen terminal to Donsö Island to avoid busy commuter times. Bring your own food since options are limited on the island. If it's been raining, the hiking trails can get slippery so wear good shoes.
- Days 5-7
Stockholm, Sweden
It's a 3-hour train ride from Gothenburg. Stay in Södermalm for good value and great atmosphere. The metro system is also an art gallery - get a 72-hour pass to see both the city and the creative stations. One traveler advised: "Go early to watch the changing of the guard at the Royal Palace - by 11 AM the narrow streets get extremely crowded with tour groups." You can find good deals on Swedish food during lunch hours (dagens rätt) from 11 AM-2 PM. Most places offer a main course, salad, bread, and coffee for about $12-15.
- Days 8-9
Helsinki, Finland
Take the overnight ferry from Stockholm. If you get seasick, book a lower deck cabin where the motion is less noticeable. You'll arrive in late morning with plenty of time to explore. Make sure to try a public sauna - Löyly offers great sea views in a modern setting. Save money by visiting Helsinki's free attractions like the Lutheran Cathedral and Chapel of Silence. An HSL day ticket covers all public transport including the ferry to Suomenlinna fortress.

- 8-day Kayak & Wild Camp the Archipelago - self-guided
My brother and I (yeah it can be done, just a few arguments) did a 7 night trip with Do the North. St Anna and the rest of the Ostergotland archipelago is incredibly scenic, quiet, cut off from the world (in a good way): there's not much more I can say about it to be honest, that hasn't been said already, about how great it is. We went during the peak summer season, and we didn't experience rain once. The sun rises about 04h30 and sets about 22h00, but it only really gets dark after 23h00 Thomas, who runs DtN, has a pretty slick operation. Everything's pre-ordered (really plan your meals, that way you won't overspend on dinner; buy loads of snacks and drinks) and packed up ready for you. You get picked up from Norrkoping (make sure you book flights so that you have at least a day there in the regenerated industrial town) and taken to the kayaks and your gear. Thomas gives you really useful 101s in navigation and packing the kayak (he seems to pack it perfectly though, you'll never do it as quick or easy in reality), and then you set off. You can go wherever you want at whatever pace you want, and you have a phone to keep in contact with DtN if you need to -- they send daily weather reports too. The equipment's genuinely top Swedish quality (Hilleberg, Haglofs, Trangia ...), and it's clear a lot of care's gone into the tour. Thomas and Sam seemed to work around the clock, to pick people up, drop them off, get you insect repellent if you forgot it etc. It really shows, and it was worth the money.
