    • Day 1

      Ulaanbaatar to Ulgii

      Take a flight from Ulaanbaatar to Ulgii. Flights run on Wednesdays and Saturdays - book early as summer seats fill up fast. From there it's a 5-hour drive to Altai Tavan Bogd National Park's northern entrance. The road is rough so consider motion sickness pills.

    • Days 2-3

      Altai Base Camp Trek

      The base camp trek is a challenging 16km journey taking about 5 hours. Local camels carry your gear but pack light. You'll reach heights of 4,050m so take it slow and drink plenty of water.       White River Valley & Tuvan Communities

      Walk through White River Valley with its glacier-fed waters. Bring filters as the water isn't safe to drink. Visit local Tuvan families who practice traditional shamanism. The women make beautiful wool crafts available for purchase. Set up camp in Black Valley for a true wilderness experience.

      Bear Valley to Khoton Lake

      Climb the steep Takhilt Pass to reach Bear Valley. Summer bears are rare but store food carefully. Visit Khoton Lake and hike to see Bronze Age petroglyphs on Biluu Hill. The lake is good for a quick cold swim.

      Eagle Hunter Experience

      Arrive at Chinggis Khaan International Airport and head to your hotel in the city center. Pick a hotel near Sukhbaatar Square for easy access to restaurants and the State Department Store where you can grab any supplies you need for the trip.

      Hustai National Park

      Visit Gandan Monastery in the morning before taking a 2-hour drive to Hustai National Park. You'll have a chance to see the Takhi, the world's only truly wild horses. Visit early morning or late afternoon when the horses are most active. The temperature can change quickly even in summer so bring layers.

      Karakorum

      Take a 4-5 hour drive to the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire. Stop at Erdene Zuu Monastery, the oldest Buddhist monastery in Mongolia with its 108 surrounding stupas. Women should bring a headscarf and everyone should remove hats inside temples. Consider getting an English-speaking guide at the local museum to better understand the history.

      Ongi Temple

      Drive 290km through the Mongolian steppe to reach Ongi Temple ruins. Your driver will know good spots to stop for photos along the way. The ruins look beautiful at sunset. You'll stay at your first ger camp here, giving you a real taste of traditional Mongolian living.

      Gobi Desert Exploration

      See the Flaming Cliffs of Bayanzag, where dinosaur fossils were discovered. Head to the huge Khongor sand dunes the next day. Plan to climb the dunes early morning or late afternoon when the sand isn't too hot. If you want to ride camels book through your ger camp instead of independent operators.

      Yolyn Am (Eagle Valley)

      Take a 3-4 hour trek through this impressive gorge. You'll need sturdy shoes with good grip since the valley floor can get slippery. Bring binoculars to spot wildlife like ibex and bearded vultures. If you're visiting in spring you might still see ice in the deepest parts of the gorge.

      Terelj National Park

      Fly back to Ulaanbaatar then drive an hour to Terelj National Park. Check out Turtle Rock and Ariyabal Meditation Temple. Take the temple stairs slowly the altitude can be challenging. The viewing platform near the temple is a popular spot for sunset.

      Genghis Khan Statue and Ulaanbaatar

      Visit the huge Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue an hour's drive from Terelj. Get to the viewing platform on the horse's head early to avoid the crowds. Back in Ulaanbaatar you can shop for souvenirs at the State Department Store or try Naran Tuul Market for more authentic items.

      Departure

      Book an afternoon flight to avoid Ulaanbaatar's morning traffic. If you have time visit the National Museum of Mongolia before heading to the airport.
