10 Day Portugal Itinerary, incl. Lisbon and Porto
A rich Portuguese tapestry unfolds across 3 major cities: 3 nights each in Lisbon, Porto, and Albufeira. UNESCO sites like Sintra's Pena Palace, Douro Valley wine tours, and beachfront relaxation complement 9 breakfasts, 4 lunches, and 4 dinners.
- Days 1-3
Lisbon
Begin your Portugal adventure in the capital city. "The SANA Malhoa in Lisbon was particularly excellent, with great attention to detail." Visit Pastel de Nata cafes before 9 AM to avoid crowds. Take the historic Tram 28 before noon when lines are shorter. Plan a day trip to Sintra and get to Pena Palace by 8:30 AM before tour groups arrive. Bring comfortable shoes with good grip. The cobblestone streets in Lisbon get slippery, especially in the Alfama district.
- Day 4
Fátima Day Trip
- Days 5-6
Porto
Take a morning train from Lisbon to Porto (3 hours). "The train rides were enjoyable, though first class had limited food options for the 6-hour journey - pack snacks." Book accommodation in the Ribeira district to be close to port wine cellars. Go on a Douro River cruise at sunset for the best photos. Book your port wine tastings at Cálem Cellars early since spots fill up fast during peak season.
- Day 7
Douro Valley
Take a day trip through the Douro Valley. A recent visitor noted: "Our guide David and driver Paulo made the winery tours at Fonseco and Croft a highlight - the valley views are incredible." Start with a morning river cruise for the best light. You'll enjoy lunch at a family vineyard with authentic local food.
- Days 8-9
Albufeira
- Day 10
Return to Lisbon
Book an early flight from Faro to Lisbon (45 minutes) for your departure. Schedule international flights for afternoon departure since morning traffic to Faro airport can be heavy.
10 Days in Portugal, incl. Lisbon and Porto
Rich cultural heritage awaits at Lisbon's Belém Tower, Porto's São Bento station, and São Miguel Island. Three nights each at Lisboa Plaza, The Editory House Ribeira, and Pestana Bahia Praia feature wine tastings and river cruises.
- Days 1-3
Lisbon
Land early to skip Lisbon's busy afternoon airport traffic. Start with a food and wine walking tour in Baixa district. A recent visitor shared: "The Lisbon food tour filled my soul with delights. The guide's local insights about bacalhau and green wine made it so much more than just tastings." Visit Belém early on day 2 before 10 AM when crowds appear. Start at Jerónimos Monastery to avoid peak crowds. Take tram 15E from downtown instead of driving. Save Alfama district for late afternoon when you'll get better photos and the steep cobblestone streets are less slippery. Plan your Sintra trip for day 3. Get to Pena Palace when it opens at 9:30 AM before tour buses arrive. Bring good walking shoes for the steep palace climb. Pack a light jacket since the hills run 5-10 degrees cooler than the city.
- Days 4-6
Porto
Take a morning train from Lisboa-Santa Apolónia to Porto. It's a 3-hour ride. Book accommodation near Ribeira district for easy walking access. Visit São Bento station before 9 AM to photograph the tile murals without crowds. Plan your Clérigos Tower visit for early morning when temperatures are lower. You'll need to climb 240 steps. Take the six bridges cruise in late afternoon for the best lighting along the riverfront. For your Douro Valley wine tour, remember sunscreen and water since vineyard areas offer minimal shade. One visitor noted: "The family-run wine estate lunch overlooking the terraced vineyards was a highlight - so much more intimate than the big commercial wineries."
- Days 7-9
Azores (São Miguel Island)
Fly from Porto to Ponta Delgada. The flight takes 2 hours. Weather changes quickly here so bring layers and rain gear. Stay at Pestana Bahia Praia Nature Resort if you want easy beach access. While these are marked as leisure days, make time for the volcanic lakes. Visit Sete Cidades before noon to avoid the typical midday fog.
- Day 10
10 Days in Portugal, incl. Lisbon and Porto
The grand Portuguese circuit takes you through 3 major destinations: Lisbon's UNESCO sites, Porto's historic center, and the Azores Islands. Three nights each in Lisbon, Porto, and Azores showcase Pena Palace tours, Douro Valley wine tastings, and beach relaxation.
- Days 1-3
Lisbon & Surroundings
Begin your Portugal journey in Lisbon, a city where history meets modern life. Start with an evening food and wine walking tour in the Baixa district around 5 PM before dinner crowds arrive. Pack comfortable shoes for Lisbon's steep hills. A recent visitor shared: "The codfish cake and green wine tasting in the historic center was a highlight - but bring a light jacket for evening tours even in summer." On day 2 visit the UNESCO sites. Head to Belém Tower before 9 AM to avoid tour groups, then explore Jerónimos Monastery. Spend your afternoon in the winding Alfama district, where narrow streets provide shade from the sun. Take tram 28 for the full experience but keep your belongings close during busy times. Make a day trip to Sintra on day 3. Start at Pena Palace (30 minutes by train from Rossio Station). The morning fog usually lifts by 10 AM for better photos. Visit Quinta da Regaleira later when it's less crowded. Wear shoes with good grip since the initiation well can be slippery.
- Days 4-6
Porto & Douro Valley
Take the morning train to Porto (3 hours). Start at São Bento station to admire its beautiful tile work. Spend your afternoon walking through Porto's Ribeira district with its colorful buildings and port wine cellars. Book wine tastings ahead as they get fully booked in peak season. Plan a full Porto city tour on day 5. Start at Lello Bookstore at 9:30 AM with pre-booked tickets to skip long lines. Take the Six Bridges cruise in late afternoon for the best light. Visit Clérigos Tower early to avoid crowds at the 240-step climb. Spend day 6 in the Douro Valley wine region. The drive takes about 90 minutes each way through scenic roads. Take a river cruise from Pinhão to see the vineyard terraces from the water. A visitor noted: "The family estate lunch overlooking the valley was incredible - try the local olive oil and ask about harvest seasons."
- Days 7-10
Azores Islands
Fly to São Miguel in the morning. Pack for changeable weather with layers and rain gear. Island life moves at its own pace so keep your plans flexible. You'll have time to explore volcanic sites hot springs and coastal views. The Vista do Rei viewpoint hike takes about 2 hours round trip and offers views of Sete Cidades lakes. Book whale watching tours 2-3 days ahead and choose early morning trips for calmer waters. Visit the Furnas hot springs but bring water shoes as the ground gets very hot.

- Charming Portugal Highlights - 10 Days
Second time in Portugal after a Lisbon city break and we were looking for a more complete itinerary that took us through the iconic places of Portugal. With the hopes to not be chunked in any tourist bus. The itinerary was great, and PTC's support with Dany was 24/7 before and during the trip. We've opted for a mix of transfers and car rental and the directions were always precise and spot on to what we were looking for. Couldn't recommend more.
