9 Days in Portugal, incl. Porto and Azores
São Miguel Island reveals its treasures over 4 days in this 9-day tour: Sete Cidades' twin lakes, Furnas' thermal springs, and Terra Nostra park. Additional stops include pineapple plantations, Gorreana tea factory, and traditional Cozido das Furnas.
- Days 1-2
Porto
Start in Porto's UNESCO-listed historic center. Take your first afternoon to wander around but save the main sightseeing for Day 2's guided tour. Get to Livraria Lello early since lines start forming by 9am at this bookstore that helped inspire Harry Potter. The Porto walking tour covers Palácio da Bolsa and Clérigos Tower. Wear good walking shoes for the tower's 225 steps. Cross the river to Vila Nova de Gaia for Port wine tastings. Book an evening food tour to try local specialties like francesinha.
- Days 3-4
Douro Valley
Take the N222 road to Pinhão (2 hours) to see some of Europe's most beautiful scenery. Explore the terraced vineyards and sample local wines. Many visitors love the vineyard picnic lunches but keep a backup plan since weather can change quickly. Take the river cruise in late afternoon when sunlight hits the terraces perfectly. Stay in Pinhão to be close to the wineries.
- Days 5-7
São Miguel Island, Azores
Fly from Porto to Ponta Delgada (2h15m). Stay in Ponta Delgada's historic center while exploring São Miguel Island. On Day 6 visit Sete Cidades. Get to Vista do Rei viewpoint before 11am to see the twin lakes before fog rolls in. Bring water shoes for Caldeira Velha's thermal pools since volcanic rocks get slippery. Head to Furnas Valley on Day 7. As one visitor said: "Don't miss the cozido das Furnas - this traditional stew cooked by volcanic steam is a unique experience." Visit Terra Nostra Garden's thermal pool early for more privacy. Wear dark swimwear because the iron-rich water can stain light colors.
- Day 8
Free Day in São Miguel
- Day 9
Departure
- Day 1
São Jorge Island Arrival
Book a morning flight to São Jorge Airport since afternoon fog can delay flights. The island is small, so transfers to your hotel take about 20 minutes. Spend your first day getting settled and adjusting to island time. In the evening, walk through Velas' historic center and try local restaurants serving fresh-caught seafood.
- Days 2-3
São Jorge's Famous Fajãs
Dedicate two days to exploring São Jorge's fajãs - flat coastal areas created by ancient landslides. Visit Fajã dos Vimes early to see Europe's northernmost coffee plantation while morning fog creates ideal growing conditions. When hiking to Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, pack hiking boots and trekking poles since the trail gets steep on the volcanic terrain.
- Days 4-5
Pico Island Adventures
Catch the morning ferry to Pico Island (1 hour 15 minutes). Plan your Mount Pico hike carefully since weather changes rapidly. As one hiker noted: "Clear mornings often cloud over by 11am. Start at sunrise for the best summit views of neighboring islands." Set aside a full day to explore the UNESCO-listed vineyards, where historic volcanic stone walls called currais shield grape vines from Atlantic winds.
- Day 6
Whale Watching & Natural Pools
Book a morning whale watching tour when the sea is calmest. The waters between Pico and Faial are perfect for spotting cetaceans. In the afternoon, visit Pico's natural pools at Cachorro - remember water shoes for the sharp volcanic rocks. A visitor suggests: "The pools at Barca are less crowded than Lajes but equally beautiful. Go at low tide for the best swimming conditions."
- Day 7
Faial Island Exploration
Take the 30-minute ferry to Faial. Start at Capelinhos Volcano for dramatic morning photos of its moon-like landscape. Visit Horta Marina in the afternoon and stop at Peter Café Sport for the island's best gin & tonics. Check the weather before heading to the caldeira viewpoint since it often gets cloudy after midday.
- Day 8
Departure from Faial
8 Day São Miguel Azores Itinerary, incl. Ponta Delgada and Furnas
The eight-day Azores tour spans four main locations: Ponta Delgada's historic sites, Sete Cidades' crater lakes, Furnas' thermal valleys, and Ribeira Grande's cultural attractions. Includes accommodations, transportation, and most meals.
- Day 1
Ponta Delgada Arrival
- Days 2-3
Ponta Delgada & Lagoa do Fogo
Start your morning at Portas da Cidade before the crowds arrive. The city's architecture stands out with its black basalt stone and white walls. Visit the local market from 7:30 AM to see the morning's fresh catch coming in. Plan your trip to Lagoa do Fogo (Fire Lake) for day 3. Get to Barrosa mountain's viewpoint before 11 AM to beat the fog. Take a break at Caldeira Velha's thermal pools but bring water shoes for the slippery natural stone. Stop by Ribeira Grande's pottery workshop in the afternoon to watch the demonstrations.
- Day 4
Sete Cidades Lakes
- Days 5-6
Furnas Valley
Spend two full days exploring Furnas Valley's geothermal sites. Try the local Cozido das Furnas, cooked underground by volcanic heat. Wear dark swimwear at Terra Nostra Park's thermal pool to avoid stains. A recent visitor shared: "The tea plantation tour was fascinating—seeing century-old processing machines still in use. Try the orange pekoe, it's their specialty."
- Day 7
East Coast Explorer
- Day 8
Departure
Leave from Ponta Delgada early. If you have a later flight, stop by the marina for fresh pastries at a local café.
What people love about 10-day Azores Archipelago tours
- Best of Porto & Azores in 9 days
Having previously explored Lisbon many years ago, we were eager to delve deeper into Portugal's diverse landscapes. Our second visit to Porto and Ponta Delgada, though bustling, reinforced our decision to return. The country's charm and hospitality are truly unmatched. Our accommodations, were impeccably located, clean, and comfortable. The Douro Valley hotel views were a standout. Sao Miguel Island, however, was the crown jewel of this trip and we will definitely be back to explore more islands in the Azores.
