What people love about Bicycle Tours in Balkans
- Cycling in the Balkans ( 4 Countries Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro)
Stunning scenery, great cycling (highlights were the descents to Pluzine and Kotor), good food, chance to go swimming in some lovely lakes, some organisational problems which may have been due to the big group size (21) but did detract from the experience in some areas: the route differed on occasion from the one advertised in the itinerary; we had to move hotels on the rest day in Kotor which was a bit disruptive, and this wasn't communicated until quite late; on many days we were split across multiple different accommodations (including in some cases what seemed like Airbnbs) due to lack of hotel options. A lot of the hotel options were actually pretty good (the best one being in Peje), but the two nights in guesthouses were more basic and people were sharing bathrooms or even a room with someone else despite paying for the single supplement; that would maybe have been acceptable had it been flagged in the itinerary, or at least people could book or not based on having that information beforehand. All of this makes it sound like a poor experience but it really wasn't, I had a great time and can definitely recommend cycling in this part of the world
- Budapest to Sofia Adventure
The trip was great! The tour guide is friendly. Hotels and transportation were all well arranged, and you have some freedom to see what you want to see in the cities. Should have arranged one more day in Sofia after the tour. Overall it's was a wonderful experience!
- Cycle Tour In Albania - UNESCO 10 Day Tour
We had a truly brilliant time with Cycle Albania. The country blew us away with its wild beauty, majestic mountains, and warm-hearted, kind people. Erlis, our guide, was fantastic. He was encouraging, informative and dealt with all our varying abilities so well. Likewise Dhani, the van driver/bike fixer/snack provider was brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble for him. The tour was varied, fascinating and challenging in just the right way. The choice of accommodation delighted, from mountain farm to beachside hotel...and wherever we went the food was out of this world. It was an unforgettable 8 days in the saddle...a bike is the perfect way to explore this wonderful country.
What our customers ask about Bicycle Tours & Trips in Balkans
What are the most scenic cycling routes in the Balkans region?
The Balkans provides cyclists with routes that span from Croatia's blue Kvarner Bay to the peaks of Slovenia's Julian Alps and Bulgaria's mountains. The Dalmatian Coast route stands out as a favorite where riders pedal between Split Hvar and Dubrovnik with constant views of the Adriatic Sea. Many routes connect small villages with coastal paths and mountain trails. As one TourRadar traveler noted: "We were extremely happy with the bike trip through Slovenia's Julian Alps. The scenery was breathtaking and the riding was outstanding."
What are the best times of year for cycling tours in the Balkans?
Plan your Balkans cycling trip between April and October when weather conditions are most reliable. The Dalmatian Coast works best from May to September with many cyclists based at places like Hotel Marul in Split. For Romania's Transylvania region June through August brings pleasant riding weather particularly around the Daniel Castle area in Talisoara. Slovenia's mountain paths near Kranjska Gora are at their best from April to October with clear skies and moderate temperatures.
What type of accommodation can I expect on Balkans cycling tours?
Your nights will be spent in a mix of 3-4 star hotels and local guesthouses that cater to cyclists. Options range from boutique spots like Hotel Vila Nora in Hvar to unique properties such as Farma Sotira a working trout farm with guest rooms. Coastal properties like Hotel Valamar Club offer sea views after long rides. A TourRadar traveler noted: "The accommodations exceeded our expectations from the historic Hotel Borik in Lumbarda to modern seaside resorts each offering perfect comfort after a day of cycling."
Are electric bikes (e-bikes) available on Balkans cycling tours?
E-bikes can be rented on most tours for 35-45 USD per day. LIFE Adventures in Croatia provides Trek Powerfly 4 models while CarpatBike equips riders with Winora e-bikes on Transylvania routes. As noted by a TourRadar traveler: "Having the e-bike option made the hillier sections along the Dalmatian Coast much more enjoyable especially around Hvar island where the terrain is quite challenging."
How do the multi-day cycling routes in different Balkans countries compare?
Each country offers its own cycling character. Croatian routes mix island-hopping with 30-60km daily rides along the coast and through wine country. Slovenian paths combine Alpine climbs with valley roads for 40-50km daily rides. Montenegro balances seaside and mountain routes covering 25-45km each day. Accommodations like Hotel Cajupi in Gjirokastra and Hotel Marul in Split serve as bases for these varied adventures. A TourRadar traveler noted: "Each country offered completely different terrain and scenery making the whole experience incredibly diverse."
How much cultural experience is included in Balkans cycling tours?
The tours blend active cycling with local culture. Stops include UNESCO sites like Split's Diocletian's Palace wine tastings in Pelješac and visits to traditional villages. Routes pass by ancient monasteries and historic towns while stays at places like Hotel Nertili in Sarande let visitors experience local life. A TourRadar traveler commented: "The combination of cycling through stunning landscapes while experiencing local traditions and cuisine made this trip truly special."
