What people love about Hiking & Trekking Tours in Argentina
- Highlights El Calafate & El Chalten
Absolutely top marks for the people taking care of me: the hotel staff, drivers, mountain guide, ... They were friendly, accommodating, competent and extremely well-organized. From that point of view, it's five stars. However, there is one detail that I recommend everyone to inquire about before the booking, so you are not disappointed like I was. For any trip, there is a maximum number of people given, 10 in this case, and when I checked for the date that I wanted, it said 5 places left on that trip. That meant 5 people were already booked, right? No such luck, it turned out I was the only participant. Later I realized that this is a default setting, just like the slogan "Filling fast" beside every upcoming start date. Wrong again. This kind of company policy is misleading at best.
- Mountain Escape – Patagonia: El Chalten – 5 Days
The guide and porter, Pedro and Miguel, were fantastic. Pedro is very knowledgeable about the route, the terrain, what conditions are safe and the best techniques to mitigate for icy, snowy terrains etc. He also knew everything about the areas history, culture, traditions, wildlife etc. He was very patient and also kept up the motivation on what is a very demanding route. Miguel was our porter. He is a stoic quiet man but funny, and friendly. Miguel has some fantastic stories too. He is a trained mountain rescuer so I felt very safe with him accompanying us on some of the more challenging passes. The route itself was difficult and risky in places, but enjoyable. It is not for the faint hearted but the risk was rewarded with amazing views. Recommendations for the tour opporator would be to send the itinerary in English and perhaps a packing list.
- Patagonia Hiking
It's an amazing trip. Beautiful scenery, exciting rafting, good recommendation of restaurants.
What our customers ask about Hiking & Trekking Tours & Trips in Argentina
When is the best time of year for hiking in Argentina's different regions?
Argentina's hiking seasons vary across its regions. From October to March Patagonia sees its best hiking conditions with December to February being ideal for El Calafate and El Chalten. Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego welcome hikers during summer (December-February) with longer days and warmer weather. The Aconcagua climbing window spans mid-November to late February when conditions are stable. The trails near Mendoza's vineyards can be explored year-round though spring (September-November) and fall (March-May) offer the most pleasant temperatures. One TourRadar traveler noted: "We visited in January and the conditions were perfect - great visibility at Mount Fitz Roy and comfortable temperatures for hiking."
How physically demanding are Argentina's hiking tours?
Each region presents different physical challenges. The Perito Moreno Glacier trails near El Calafate offer gentle walks on clear paths. El Chalten's popular Laguna de los Tres trek needs moderate fitness with 6-8 hours of walking and 2000ft elevation changes. Serious mountaineers tackle Aconcagua's multi-day expeditions above 14000ft. Most Patagonia tours need hikers to carry basic supplies in daypacks. A TourRadar traveler shared: "The Torres del Paine circuit was challenging but doable with regular fitness - we hiked 5-7 hours daily with plenty of breaks."
Where do I sleep during multi-day treks in Argentina?
Sleep arrangements change by location. El Chalten features established bases like Camp Poincenot with dome tents and dining areas. Aconcagua climbers stay in mountain shelters including Plaza de Mulas Base Camp at 14000 feet. Some Torres del Paine routes mix camping with hotel stays at places like Hotel Kosten Aike in El Calafate. According to a TourRadar traveler: "The full camps in El Chalten were surprisingly comfortable with proper sleeping bags and mats plus a heated dining tent for meals."
How much does a typical hiking tour in Argentina cost?
Daily rates for Argentina hiking tours range from $230 to $800 based on comfort level and included services. Basic 3-day treks start at $690 while high-end 10-day experiences in places like Torres del Paine can reach $8000. A TourRadar traveler remarked: "While not cheap the quality of guides accommodations and overall experience made the investment worthwhile."
What wildlife might I encounter while hiking in Argentina?
Each hiking region offers unique wildlife encounters. Patagonia's trails reveal guanacos Andean condors flamingos and occasional pumas around Torres del Paine. Tierra del Fuego features Magellanic penguin colonies especially at Martillo Island. The El Calafate area hosts Andean deer and foxes. As one TourRadar traveler reported: "We saw incredible wildlife in Torres del Paine - groups of guanacos rheas with their chicks and even a condor soaring overhead."
How difficult is the trek to Mount Fitz Roy base camp?
The Mount Fitz Roy base camp route covers 24km round trip gaining 800m in elevation. Most hikers complete the journey in 8-9 hours starting from Hosteria El Pilar. The last hour presents a steep climb to Laguna de los Tres viewpoint. Early morning departures help reach the viewpoint by midday. A TourRadar traveler shared: "The climb to Laguna de los Tres was tough but entirely worth it - the views of Fitz Roy were magical and impressive."
