My mother and I just took a modified, 23-day version of Guided Europe Tours' 21-day Balkans tour. Just returned from this tour and it was extremely good with several excellent points and a couple of weaker ones. If possible, I would give it 4.5 stars overall. Tour organization George, the company owner, was great at listening to what changes we wanted and organized the trip well. Because this is a small company, they are very attentive to detail. The only (mild) negative point is that communication can be slow, again because it's a small company--I would simply recommend letting people know this from the outset and explaining that while replies may take a few days, the operator is responsible and reliable. Tour experience Vlad, our driver/guide, made the trip go very smoothly. In addition to driving skills that ensured we were completely relaxed regardless of road, traffic, or weather conditions, his English is excellent, his knowledge of the region is broad, and he has a sense of humor. On most days, he was very patient and made the longer drives more enjoyable with stories and conversation. He also made a few stops that were not on the original itinerary after consulting with us, and these were generally excellent--smaller. less-crowded sites for walks, stretches, or seeing something we particularly enjoyed. George found local tour guides for us in several of the cities outside Romania. Most were very good and a couple were excellent (particularly in Ohrid). Only one of them was not good--seemed to have no interest in his own city of Tirana--but all were on time despite our arriving from off-site locations with unpredictable driving times, and with that exception the rest were knowledgeable and open to questions. We learned a lot about the various countries we were lucky to be able to visit. Hotels were also generally very good--comfortable, clean, with nice touches and good breakfasts, friendly personnel, and attention to detail. There were two exceptions--the room in the hotel in Lovech was visibly not clean (although common areas were clean and breakfast was good), and the hotel by the airport for our last night was not good--electrical outlets, lights, ventilation, etc. were broken--but we were only there for a few hours anyway.

Most things were excellent, Indi our special guide became a friend. I didn’t like the Hollywood hotel in Sarajevo, it was noisy and the room didn’t smell good. One small thing that would be better would be if we always got 2 keys to the rooms. Some of the hotels only have us 1. Otherwise a very well organised tour, the itinerary was excellent.
