5 Day Hawaii Big Island Itinerary, incl. Kona and Volcanoes National Park
This Big Island tour spans Kailua-Kona's coast, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park's craters, and Hilo's waterfalls. Swim with manta rays at Makako Bay, trek the Kilauea Iki Trail, and marvel at stars from Mauna Kea's summit.
- Day 1
Kona Coast & Manta Ray Night Dive
Plan to get to Kailua-Kona by mid-afternoon for the highlight of your day - night snorkeling with manta rays at Makako Bay. Book this $120 activity ahead of time since it's popular. You'll get a wetsuit since the water gets cold after dark. Skip eating a big lunch before going out on the water, and take motion sickness medicine if boats make you queasy.
- Day 2
Kona Coffee & Snorkeling Trail
Start your morning at the Coffee Shack. Get there before 9 AM to avoid the crowds and enjoy your Kona coffee with amazing ocean views. Next, head to Kahaluu Beach Park for some of the best beginner-friendly snorkeling around. The rocks can be slippery, so pack water shoes and reef-safe sunscreen. Later, take on the Captain Cook Monument trail - it's a tough 2-mile walk down, so save some energy for climbing back up. Finish your day snorkeling at Two-Step (Honaunau Bay) when most people have left.
- Day 3
Volcanoes & Stargazing
Leave early for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - it's about 2.5 hours from Kona. Stop at Punalu'u Black Sand Beach to see sea turtles, which are most active in the morning. When you get to the park, check in at the Kilauea Visitor Center to learn what the volcano's up to. One visitor shared: "The Kilauea Iki Trail was challenging but worth every step - start early before the midday heat and bring twice as much water as you think you'll need." For an amazing end to your day, go stargazing at Mauna Kea Visitor Center. It's at 9,200 feet, so bring warm clothes - it can get as cold as 40°F. The free stargazing starts shortly after sunset.
- Day 4
Waterfalls & Waipi'o Valley
Start at the Waipi'o Valley lookout. You'll need a guided tour or 4WD vehicle to go down the steep road. Want the best views of Hi'ilawe Falls? Book a tour since the prime spots are on private land. Drive the Hamakua Coast to Hilo, stopping at Akaka Falls for an easy 0.4-mile walk. Visit Rainbow Falls in Hilo around 2 PM to catch those famous rainbows.
- Day 5
Departure Day
6 Days in Oahu, incl. Honolulu and Pearl Harbor
6-day Hawaii adventure including Pearl Harbor's USS Arizona Memorial and Circle Island tour to Diamond Head. Features 5 nights lodging, Ko Olina snorkeling, authentic luau at Battle of Kipapa, and 30-minute helicopter tour over Nu'uanu Pali.
- Day 1
Honolulu Arrival & Sunset Cruise
Arrive at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport and take a shared shuttle to your Waikiki hotel. Book a morning flight to make the most of your first day. In the evening take a 2.5-hour sunset dinner cruise along Waikiki's coastline toward Diamond Head. For the best photos position yourself on the port side of the boat just before sunset.
- Day 2
Pearl Harbor Deep Dive
- Day 3
Circle Island Tour
Spend a full day exploring Oahu's perimeter including Diamond Head, Halona Blowhole and the North Shore. Visit the Valley of the Temples early to avoid traffic. Pack reef-safe sunscreen and a light jacket for the breezy windward side. Stop for lunch on the North Shore to try the popular garlic shrimp trucks.
- Day 4
Nature & Aerial Views
- Day 5
Ocean Adventure & Cultural Evening
Take a morning catamaran cruise from Ko Olina for 3.5 hours of snorkeling and wildlife watching. Bring an underwater camera to capture the sea turtles. End your day at a luau at the Battle of Kipapa site with fire knife shows and traditional Hawaiian food. Wear comfortable shoes suitable for grass and sand.
- Day 6
Departure
Most hotels have 11 AM checkout but will store your luggage if you have a late flight. Use your final morning to enjoy Waikiki Beach. The airport trip takes 20-45 minutes. Plan extra time if traveling during rush hour from 6-9 AM.
5 Days in Hawaii, incl. Honolulu and Pearl Harbor
Pacific heritage comes alive at Pearl Harbor's USS Arizona Memorial, Honolulu's Iolani Palace, and Waikiki Beach. The Polynesian Cultural Center reveals island traditions, while Diamond Head Lookout and Halona Blow Hole showcase natural beauty. Professional guides lead the way during 4 nights' stay.
- Day 1
Arrival in Honolulu
Your Hawaiian adventure begins at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. The tropical air will welcome you right away. Try to book a mid-morning flight to avoid rush hour traffic and the busy afternoon arrival times from the mainland. You'll need about 25-30 minutes to reach Waikiki without traffic.
- Day 2
Pearl Harbor and City Tour
Get to Pearl Harbor by 7:30 AM before the crowds arrive. The USS Arizona Memorial tour takes about 75 minutes and operates on a first-come first-served basis. Pack water and sunscreen since there isn't much shade. Your afternoon is perfect for exploring downtown Honolulu. Visit Iolani Palace and the King Kamehameha statue. Remember to wear proper shoes for the palace tour and leave your camera flash off.
- Day 3
East Oahu Coastal Tour
Hit Diamond Head trail before 8 AM. The climb takes about 45 minutes with some challenging stairs near the summit. After your hike continue along the coast to see Hanauma Bay and Halona Blowhole. Make sure to stop at Pali Lookout. A recent visitor noted: "The views from Pali Lookout were incredible but bring a light jacket. The wind up there can be surprisingly chilly even on a warm day."
- Day 4
Polynesian Cultural Center
- Day 5
Departure
Most hotels have an 11 AM checkout but will store your luggage if needed. If you have time before your flight visit Ala Moana Center for souvenirs. It's just 10 minutes from Waikiki. Leave plenty of time to reach the airport. The trip takes at least 45 minutes and longer during morning rush hour (6-9 AM) or afternoon peak times (3-6:30 PM).
