10 Days in Southern Italy, incl. Amalfi Coast and Puglia
Puglia's treasures shine over 10 days, from Trani's waterfront Cattedrale di San Nicola Pellegrino to Alberobello's 14th-century trulli houses. Visit Ostuni's olive mills, admire Lecce's baroque architecture, and enjoy authentic local aperitivos across 7 distinct cities.
- Days 1-2
Amalfi Coast & Minori
Begin your journey in Minori, a picturesque town on the UNESCO-listed Amalfi Coast. "The Amalfi Coast is best explored early - watching sunrise over the cliffs is unforgettable." Take a quick 15-minute bus ride to Amalfi Town to see the Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea. If you enjoy hiking, the Sentiero Degli Dei (Path of the Gods) offers beautiful views through olive groves and wildflower fields. It's best to start your hike before 9 AM to avoid the intense summer heat.
- Days 3-4
Trani
Take the train across the country to Trani, often called the "Pearl of Puglia." You'll find a sophisticated port town with a stunning white cathedral right on the seawall and a medieval center worth exploring. Make time for the 13th-century Castello di Federico II. For the best dining experience, visit marina restaurants between 7-9 PM when fishing boats return. The local Moscato di Trani wine is worth trying at the harbor bars.
- Days 5-6
Lecce
Next stop is Lecce, nicknamed the "Florence of the South." Most attractions sit within the old town, including the ornate Santa Croce basilica and Roman amphitheater. A previous visitor notes: "The best time to photograph Lecce's honey-colored baroque buildings is during the golden hour, just before sunset." In the evening, join locals for their traditional passeggiata around Piazza Sant'Oronzo.
- Day 7
Ostuni & Alberobello
Visit a historic masseria to learn about olive oil production from ancient trees, some up to 3,000 years old. Then explore Ostuni, the "White City," before heading to Alberobello with its unique trulli houses. Be careful on Alberobello's slippery cobblestone streets, especially in the Rione Monti quarter.
- Days 8-9
Matera & Bari
Discover Matera's fascinating sassi cave dwellings, a UNESCO site. One traveler suggests: "The early morning light makes the sassi glow - get up at sunrise for the best photos." Take a 2-hour train ride to Bari, where you can walk through medieval Bari Vecchia and visit the Basilica di San Nicola. The harbor area offers excellent seafood restaurants.
- Day 10
Depart from Bari
8 Day Southern Italy Itinerary, incl. Bari and Lecce
A 7-day route covers 10 Puglian cities from Bari to Polignano a Mare. The tour features UNESCO sites in Alberobello, wine tastings at Semeraro Winery, and tours of Lecce's Baroque architecture, with stays at luxury wine resorts.
- Day 1
Bari to Alberobello
Land at Bari Airport and travel one hour to Alberobello, a UNESCO town known for its trulli houses with distinctive cone-shaped roofs. Spend your afternoon walking through the Rione Monti and Aia Piccola districts. Visit the trulli later in the day after tour groups leave you'll get better photos in the softer light.
- Day 2
Locorotondo & Ostuni
Start in Locorotondo with its circular historic center and excellent local wines. A short 30-minute drive takes you to Ostuni, the 'White City' built across three hills. Walk up to the cathedral through winding streets but watch your step on the smooth limestone paths. Finish your day with dinner at a traditional masseria farmhouse.
- Days 3-4
Taranto & Wine Country
Drive an hour to Taranto to see Italy's biggest mussel farming operations. Visit two wineries to learn about both old and new ways of making Primitivo wine. Plan your wine tastings for the morning when your taste buds are sharper. The local Primitivo di Manduria DOC makes excellent red wines perfect for dinner.
- Day 5
Matera
Travel 1.5 hours inland to Matera, an ancient city built into rock. Walk through the sassi districts where homes were carved right into limestone cliffs. Get a local guide to help you navigate the complex streets and learn the fascinating history. Bring water and sunscreen since you'll be outside most of the day.
- Day 6
Lecce
Take a 1.5-hour drive to Lecce, often called the 'Florence of the South.' Walk through town in the morning to see beautiful Baroque churches built from golden local stone. Visit the Roman amphitheater and Basilica di Santa Croce. Remember that shops close between 1-4 PM for the traditional afternoon break.
- Day 7
Polignano a Mare
- Day 8
Departure from Bari
What people love about 10-day Puglia tours
- Explore Southern Italy
Interesting cities each with a unique character.
- Discover Matera and Taste of Salento Tour
We had a fabulous time on our trip to Salento & Matera. I enjoyed staying at Tenuta Linazza, olive farm, where we went on daily tours to see the area and then came back to relax before gourmet dinners prepared by Emilio. Every day was different, we were taken by a family member who took the time to explain history and show us unknown places. Thanks to Emilio, Miguel, and Antonio and everyone else for a memorable stay. Matera was so interesting, we enjoyed two days of touring the old city and a hike across the valley. The hotel Le Dodici Lune was built into the cave walls, served good food. Teresa, the manager went out of her way to make us comfortable. She personally gave us a pasta making lesson and when no taxis were available drove us to the train station. I highly recommend Salento tours who organized the tour and transfers.
- Seductive Southern Italy
TourRadar trip was fabulous from start to finish. Every hotel was excellent. Any meal which was included in tour was great. Every guide along the way was extremely informative and friendly. Our tour leader Francesco was absolutely amazing from the first moment we met him in Naples until our departures in Lecce. Francesco was genuinely caring, considerate towards every person in our group, highly amusing and entertaining... the perfect tour leader!
