7 Days in Ecuador, incl. Quito and Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve
Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve welcomes LGBT+ travelers with 3 nights in jungle lodges. Rich cultural exchanges await at Seoqueya, while 10 monkey species and Laguna Grande's waters provide natural highlights.
- Days 1-2
Quito
Begin your journey in Ecuador's capital, situated at 9,350 feet. Start day one slowly to adjust to the altitude. Walk through Plaza Foch and take the TelefériQo cable car up to Cruz Loma for panoramic city views. Try to book your cable car ride in the early morning before clouds roll in and block the view. On day two, explore colonial Quito's UNESCO Heritage sites, including La Compañía church with its stunning gold-leaf interior. Visit the Equator monument at Mitad del Mundo early to avoid crowds and get clear photos between the hemispheres. Get your Amazon gear ready for evening departure - quick-dry clothes and closed-toe water shoes are essential.
- Days 3-6
Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve
Take a night bus to El Puente, then travel by motorized canoe for 3 hours into the reserve. The narrow river routes offer great wildlife viewing opportunities. Keep your camera ready but safe from water spray. As one traveler said: "The morning river mist created an ethereal atmosphere as we spotted our first troops of squirrel monkeys swinging through the canopy." Life in Cuyabeno follows natural patterns. The best wildlife viewing happens on early morning walks (starting at 6 AM). When the afternoon heat sets in and animals rest, you'll visit local indigenous communities or swim in Laguna Grande. Bring a reliable headlamp for night walks - lodge equipment can be unreliable. Night excursions show you a different jungle, with tree frogs, kinkajous, and possibly caimans visible in your light beam.
- Days 6-7
Return to Quito
6 Day Ecuador Amazon Itinerary, incl. Cuyabeno Reserve and Coca
Rich experiences unfold across Quito, Lago Agrio, Cuyabeno Reserve, and Coca. Waita Lodge hosts 5 nights of jungle walks, canoe expeditions, and wildlife viewing, concluding at Torre Orquidea in Coca.
- Day 1
Quito to Cuyabeno Reserve
Take the 7-hour bus ride from Quito to Lago Agrio followed by a 2-hour drive to Tierras Orientales. If you get motion sickness on winding roads bring some medication. After lunch hop on a 2.5-hour motorized canoe to Waita Lodge. Watch for pink river dolphins and monkeys along the way. A recent visitor shared: "The lagoon in front of the lodge offered incredible wildlife viewing opportunities right from our doorstep."
- Day 2
Cuyabeno Wildlife Exploration
Get up before sunrise for the best birdwatching. You'll need binoculars - pick up a pair in Lago Agrio if you don't have them. Spend the morning on a 3-hour jungle walk learning about medicinal plants and survival skills from your guide. In the afternoon go canoeing through flooded forest areas. Pack quick-dry clothes since humidity hits 90%. End your day spotting caimans by flashlight.
- Day 3
Parrot Clay Licks & Observation Tower
Start at 5:30 AM with a 1.5-hour boat ride to see the morning parrot gathering. Bring a light jacket for the chilly morning river ride. After breakfast look for river dolphins at a river convergence point. Later climb the 28-meter observation tower. Wear shoes with good grip as humidity makes the steps slippery.
- Day 4
Deep Jungle Expedition
- Day 5
Final Wildlife Viewing & Transfer to Coca
- Day 6
Return to Quito
7 Day Peru Amazon Itinerary, incl. Cusco and Manu National Park
The pristine Amazon beckons with stays at Pilcopata, Boca Manu's Bamboo Lodge, and biodiverse Maquisapayoc. Activities include Madre de Dios River navigation, indigenous community visits, and extensive wildlife viewing throughout Manu's distinct zones.
- Day 1
Cusco to Pilcopata
Leave Cusco early for a 4-5 hour drive through the Andes to Pilcopata. Stop at Paucartambo's colonial town before 11 AM to experience the local market at its liveliest. The road gets rough after Paucartambo, so consider taking motion sickness medication. You'll spend the night at a lodge in Pilcopata, your first stop in the Amazon.
- Days 2-3
Pilcopata Region
Take time to adjust to the jungle environment. You can join traditional Ayahuasca ceremonies with local shamans if interested. Just make sure to choose certified practitioners and let your guide know about any health concerns. The high humidity means quick-dry clothing is essential, and you'll need to drink plenty of water.
- Day 4
Madre de Dios River Journey
- Day 5
Maquisapayoc Exploration
- Day 6
Maquisapayoc Activities
- Day 7

- 7-Day Iquitos Jungle Tour at Maniti Eco-Lodge
The experience of the jungle in itself was great. However, the Lodge was far from acceptable facilities that are today minimum acceptable conditions, 3 hours electricity each day, the room just 1 small level above camping. The guide was excellent, he was very competent and available, with a lot of know-how about wild animals and plants. Local staff was also very friendly and meals that were served, even if repeated, were tasty and healthy. In the end, my objective of watching and photographing large number of bird species came short, also even in 7 days did not have the chance to watch more monkeys, caimans, snakes, sloths, that I believe would be great. Still a great experience and ready and willing to go back there.

First time in the jungle and Nicky Amazon lodge made it one of the best experiences of my life.Evi our guide was a walking talking Google. How he managed to locate animals birds and insects amongst the jungle foliage I don't know.Even when he pointed them out I found it at first hard to see.He new every bird animal and insect by name .His knowledge of the various eco systems was amazing. The lodge was just as you would expect helpful polite nothing to much trouble.Food was excellent freshly prepared with plenty of local flavors .Our lodge was excellent hot shower room service every day. A great big tick for all the staff at Nicky lodge just amazing.
- Local Living Ecuador—Amazon Jungle
Great experience in the jungle with a great guide! Freddy was good with everyone making sure all were comfortable and accommodated. The itinerary was full of activities that were moved around due to various factors. The transportation was local buses, trucks and some hired. The bus ride was comfortable but a long five hours. I would recommend having your own snacks before getting on the bus. The accommodation was basic but expected with lovely hammocks for down time. The only surprise was no hot water at all. The best part for me were the meals provided. Great experience of local cooking and variety.
