Fantastic tour to 3 amazing countries. The local guides were friendly and very knowledgeable. We even got to see a few extra places in Armenia which were beautiful. Hotels were all lovely and in a great position. Penguin travel are very responsive, the land border was closed between georgia and Azerbaijan so we flew instead, some organisational issues in part due to the region and in part as the first time trip has run since covid. These were all resolved. Would definitely book with penguin again.

This was an excellent tour covering parts of three fascinating countries. The price of the tour reflects the fact it includes a meal each day (either lunch or dinner) in addition to breakfast every morning. The price also includes ALL entrance fees with no further charges made. All transport is also included, so this tour is quite comprehensive. To speak about our guides and drivers: in all three countries the guides were friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable and approachable. Arif in Azerbaijan, Ilona in Georgia and Meline in Armenia all did everything they could to give us the best possible experience of their respective countries. They felt like expert members of our group more than “just” service providers. Similarly our drivers added to the enjoyment of the trip. Unfortunately I do not remember all their names but I give special mention to Basil and George in Georgia and Ashot in Armenia. I should also mention our transfer guides in Armenia: Tigran and Samvel who ensured we were transferred between the border and our hotel and vice versa without fuss. Thank you also to Ms Nino at the Sakura organisation for her hard work before and during the trip to make the tour run smoothly. I can thoroughly recommend this tour and the Sakura tour operator based on this experience.

How Safe Is Independent Travel in the Caucasus?
You can definitely explore the Caucasus on your own especially Georgia where you'll find good transport links and English signs in the bigger cities. The Georgian Military Highway makes it easy to get from Tbilisi to Kazbegi with regular minibuses running the route. Getting to those amazing medieval tower villages in Svaneti or that hidden gem Lahij village in Azerbaijan though you might want some local help with that. Most travelers find it useful to join guided tours in Armenia especially around those incredible monasteries like Geghard and Noravank where you'll get so much more out of the experience with someone who knows the history.
What's The Best Way to Really Experience Those Famous Mountains?
There's something for everyone in the Caucasus Mountains whether you're a serious hiker or just want amazing views. Head to Becho village and take that beautiful 6km trail to Shdugra Waterfall where you'll get incredible views of Mount Ushba or challenge yourself with that stunning 12.5km hike up to Gergeti Trinity Church at 2170m with Mount Kazbegi towering above at 5047m. Nature lovers should check out Lagodekhi's trails where you might spot rare Lagodekhian gentiana on your way to that impressive 40-meter Ninoskhevi waterfall. Love winter sports? Gudauri's got great skiing December through April and in summer you can actually paraglide over those dramatic valleys.
How Can I Really Get Involved in Local Culture?
Beyond those fantastic Georgian feasts called Supras there's so much hands-on culture to experience here. You can make bread in traditional tonir ovens in Garni village or join locals making churchkhela in Kvareli using ancient methods with grape juice and nuts. In Kakheti you'll find family wineries still making wine the 8000-year-old UNESCO way in underground clay vessels. Over in Azerbaijan's Lahij you can watch copper artisans at work while Armenia's got these amazing carpet weaving workshops in Yerevan where you can learn traditional techniques.
What Are Some Hidden Gems Most Tourists Miss?
You've got to visit the Pankisi Valley where the Kist community makes this incredible Chechen dish called jijig galnish. The David Gareji Monastery complex sits right on Georgia's border with Azerbaijan and those 6th-century frescoes are just incredible. Ever heard of Karahunj? It's like Armenia's version of Stonehenge but actually older. And Qobustan in Azerbaijan is just mind-blowing with over 6000 ancient rock carvings plus these fascinating mud volcanoes they've got half of all the world's mud volcanoes right there.
Where Can I Find the Best Local Food?
Every area's got its specialty and you're going to want to try them all. Get yourself to Telavi for proper Kakhetian mtsvadi with some local Saperavi wine or head to Pasanauri they're basically the dumpling capital for the best khinkali you'll ever taste. In Sheki Azerbaijan you've got to try their piti it's this amazing lamb stew they cook in individual clay pots. Over in Armenia's Garni village you can watch them make traditional lavash and Yerevan's GUM market is where you'll find everything from spas to proper Armenian khorovats. The wine scene's best in Georgia's Kakheti where families still use those traditional qvevri vessels just like their ancestors did.
